Good use for left over homemade bread?

So having got a bread maker, it doesn't quite last as long as shop brought. But i hate chucking stuff. I dont freeze it because i dont know if i'm going to use it. So apart from bird feed and croutons, what can i do with it when its "going"?

I just leave mine for a few days to dry out a bit then whizz it into breadcrumbs (then freeze) and use it for cooking. I rarely make bread anymore though as it just doesn't last long enough.

Hi,

My homemade bread never lasts that long, have you thought of making a smaller loaf, also do you use a bread machine or not if so which one?

With cardamon

I also do breadcrumbs and use them to thicken sauces, curries, soups, etc and it makes for stunning garlic bread slices and pizza toast.

Stale bread is great for bread sauce for your sunday roast. Mmmm freshly made bread sauce is seriously tasty.

Do you really need to freeze breadbrumbs? They'll be alright in an airtight container won't they?

I have started making my own bread. I don't eat a lot of bread generally, maybe 1 slice a day at most. What I do is make a loaf then slice it up as soon as it's cool. Then I'll put it into little freezer bags (2 or 3 slices per bag), then take them out when I need. It keeps for at least a few weeks (probably even longer) in the freezer.

I end up with a lot of wasted bread because I use a breadmaker and, by the time I cut the paddle out of the bread, there's a whole middle third, of a small loaf anyway, that doesn't slice, it just crumbles round the hole.

Any ideas for solutions?

If you do put it out for the birds make sure there is some nuts and seeds for them too. Bread isn't nutritious enough on it's own. You could use it to mop up your roasting tin of it's fat. This has two advantages..

1. Saves pooring fat down your sink
2. Stops the bread going dry and better nutritionally for the birds.

And don't forget to put fresh water out for them.

I cut mine into cubes and toast them in the oven, then make stuffing with it by adding chopped onions & celery, a bit of stock, some herbs etc and a beaten egg or two. Bake it and eat it or freeze it after it has cooled. It freezes well and I have stuffing for the next time I have a roast dinner.

Theres some great ideas here.

Do you leave it 10 mins to cool after taking out of machine, but before removing from pan? I used to have to cut out the beater till I tried this, now it just stays in the pan when I remove the bread - still got a bit of a hole where the beater cooks, but usually only see it in a couple of slices.

Chocolate Bread & Butter Pudding

Same basic recipe but use chocolate spread instead of butter.

I haven't had that for years but am drooling just typing the words.

Good idea, also good for using in a meatballs or mixing with a bit of butter and sprinkling on top of baked veggie dishes, such a ham and potato casserole or broccoli/cauliflower cheese.


This is a great idea. Thank you for sharing - I think I'll adopt it.
You're welcome. If you do, I should mention that I sauté the onion and celery before adding.
