Curry's LG 22" HD promo - any good?
Ok, so I'm a sucker for a bargain. I saw a Curry's ad for an 22" LG HD Ready TV (£189) and I've been contemplating upgrading.
Is the TV any good? It sort of sounds too good to be true! Its the LG Flatron M2262D, and says HD 1080p Ready http://www.lge.com/uk/it-products/mo...D.jsp#features Would this be ok for Blu-Ray or PS3? |

Is this actually a UK spec device I wonder?
For one thing it is actually a computer monitor that might have a TV tuner built in. But the LG website gives no information at all about what if any tuner it has, apart from saying it is MPEG4 and claims that that is the standard for digital broadcasting. There is use of MPEG4 in Europe for HD already. But UK HD will require a DVB-T2 tuner as well. No mention of that in the specs. In fact no mention of TV capabilities at all. If you want it as a monitor or to use only with DVD/Blu-Ray/PS3 then it might be OK. But 22in is a bit small for a living room TV, some would say even my 32 in set is too small

And I would be far more inclined to believe them. The only way I would believe it is to actually sit in front of one plugged ONLY into an aerial and the mains (so no chance of cheating) and see it tuned to something like E4 or whatever then pull the aerial lead out and see the picture vanish. |

Surely its a breach of Trading Standards to advertise a TV with Freeview if its not got it?

I have managed to track down a manual for the beastie
http://www.lge.com/uk/support/produc...oduct-profile# It does indeed have a tuner in it, digital at that. What isn't so clear is whether it is a full UK spec device. The specs are somewhat vague on that score but I would be surprised if it didn't conform to the UK digital standard. As i said the only way to be absolutely sure is to go play with one. And make sure things like the red button services work properly. Chances are they do it's just not made very clear in the blurb. |

I just hope Currys actually have one on display.. knowing them they might just have a pile of boxes ready to go! |

Sure, I think I will have to go in store, particularly just to see what picture quality it has.

If you go to one of the big out of town sheds then you stand a better chance of finding one on the shelf. Currys also do the 19 and 27 in versions of this set. (M1962D and M2762D) which as far as I can tell are more or less the same guts tacked on to different size display panels. So if they don't have the exact model you can check out one of the others for stuff like the Freeview features. |

Thanks, I think seeing it in person is probably the next step.
The penny has finally dropped that this is a "PC Monitor" and not specifically a TV but I don't see that being a huge problem (it being a bedroom TV). I doubt very much there are many other 1080p in this price range - of course I understand that you get what you pay for etc. |

I counted more than a dozen 22" sets at the £190 mark or less. Four of those appear to be true 1080p sets. There's even a different LG model - the 1080p M227WD - which is on Amazon for £180.
I'm not saying that the Comet deal is bad... But it's not exceptional, that's all.

Unless you are sat on top of it (like you would with a pc monitor) i think you may struggle to notice much of difference between SD and HD, let alone full HD 1080

well with all bigger tellys being 1080 p then its only a matter of time that the wee tellys go the same
technology marches on and it gets cheaper its about time that small tellys actually dropped to a more realistic price wonder if its DVB-2t tuner ?? you may not get analogue tuner though |

Wwith bigger screen TVs you can see the difference. 32 inch is dubious as to whether you can see the difference between HD and Full HD so anything less than that is a waste of time making it Full HD and potensionally making it more expensive. I guess in this set it is just another bit of circuitary as I presume the screen will be a PC screen like (most if not all) screens smaller than 26inch

Well, seeing as these are crossover sets - PC monitor come TV - then there's a good chance that the average user might be doing exactly that. XBox or PS3 gaming in 1080p anyone?
![]() (well in my case anyway). There's no way I'd switch the living room TV to a 22" way to small, but then there's no way I'd want a 42" screen in my bedroom. And thanks for the link to that other LG TV. That actually does look better. |

I've got an older 22" LG Monitor/TV and it's ok on SD material and good on HD material. Sound is awful, just plain rubbish.
My £5 mono clock radio is about 10 times better audio quality (and that's a crap matsui alarm clock that I'm ashamed to say I own!) However, most LG's seems to have reasonable pictures, good sockets (although not all have headphone sockets so check if needed!) |

LG's are pretty big in America. Meaning Joe Public would probably have bought one or recommend one. Not that I'm saying that should be an endorsement for you.
On a separate note, I worked at Currys and whenever they had these promo's on, they would 95% of the time run out of stock pretty quickly. If you're thinking of getting one, get there early especially over the weekend. |

Well I went and had a look, and I'll admit when I found it in the store I was a little underwhelmed. They'd got a Panasonic DVD promo on and it didn't look that good.
Long story short, I went back later for a second viewing and it had moved on to a Freeview promo that looked reasonable - so I took the plunge. I've given it a quick DVD test - Cars and Star Trek XI - both looking superb. I've also hooked it up to the aerial and got all Freeview channels (and a digi guide) and it also picked up radio and a few analogue channels (BBC2, C4 and five) although the signal is not brilliant from my aerial. Have to say its quite a good little telly for the price. Thanks to everyone for their replies! |

At a guess...Plug in a digital capable aerial, tune in the channels and then watch?
What does the manual tell you to do? |
