Inspired by the thread "Dad's Fish and Chips" - does your local chippy still wrap them up in newspaper? Or do most now use boxes?

Our local chippy uses paper but not with print on - I think it is paper left over from roll-ends.

I wonder if printed paper is banned under some sort of H & S law now?

As a kid, my friends and I would always hope to get a "page 3" on our chips

Does anyone out there run a chippy?

I think it's probably been banned ages back! All I ever see is plain white paper or the paper bags.

Not in ages. And ,even when they did, they never used "The Sun".....
There's nothing more off putting than trying to pick up the last tiny crunchy bit of chip, and finding out it's a nipple.

Damn right! Bloody do-gooders. They just don't taste the same out of a dirty clean box.

I don't know if it's actually banned but they don't use it because of hygiene reasons, apparently. It used to be concern about lead poisoning from the newsprint but modern inks don't pose that risk.

There's something about wrapping food in paper that once wiped someones arse slightly wrong.

My local chippie uses those nasty styrene containers.

However, they use proper fat (not tasteless veggie oil) for frying; makes a world of difference! I'm sure it's because it's in a small village and the PC brigade haven't caught up with them yet!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure they are mutually exclusive in their current incarnation - at least I hope they are!

Styrofoam boxes with lids are terrible. They just make everything soggy.
The trays can be ok, especially for me as I like a lot of vinegar.

Chippies that use paper use rejected rolls from the printing industry.

There is a bit about it in an episode of Ever Wondered About Food?
It's currently showing on Good Food Channel.

After being diagnosed with bladder cancer I researched the condition. One thing that popped up during my researches was a compound called Black 38. One of its uses was in paper printing. It was demonstrated to be a carcinogen in the animal model, and was suspected to be carcinogenic in human.

Perhaps that is why newspaper is no longer used to wrap chips. It's just speculation as I wasn't really interested in whether there was a connection.

Why would the so-called PC brigade give a shite whether your chippy uses proper fat?

Thank you for your kind words.

Fortunately the cancer was at a very early stage. It was restricted to the urothelium (first layer) and wasn't of an aggressive nature. I only needed surgery and one shot of chemo into the bladder. I've been clear for 3 1/2 years. I was very lucky.

'Cos it's not right, is it? Using animal fat (which actually tastes of something) rather than using harmless vegetable fat (which tastes of nothing) must be wrong?

Are you seriously telling me the PC brigade wouldn't have a view on this? They have a view on just about everything and so long as it makes our life more miserable or un-enjoyable, then they are happy.

Why would PC come into the equation? What exactly is PC about using vegetable oil?

Do you think that it's possible that chippies use vegetable oil because it tends to last longer and doesn't smoke as much? When it comes to cleaning the fryer, believe me, it's a lot easier as oil is liquid at room temperature.

All I know is, lard tastes nicer. The fact it's easier to clean is irrelevant - it should be about customer satisfaction NOT ease of employee conditions.

The PC brigade like to play on the "non-offensive" side (thereby becoming offensive); so I guess that promoting veggie oil is kinda their thing!

It's about saturated fats, which are worse for your health.

...and also about the fact that chip shops don't want to lose the custom of the many, many vegetarians that there are in this country (myself included!).

I was just about to make the veggie point. I'm not and I have a deep fat fryer filled with dripping for my homemade chips but if I was a veggie then I wouldn't want to miss out on my chips. I'm guessing veg oil is also a lot cheaper than animal fat as well.

I think beef dripping is the muts nuts for chips, though oddly I prefer duck/goose fat for christmas roasties.

Funny to see this thread, as we were discussing this very issue in the restaurant kitchen in which I cook yesterday. Pretty sure that EH have more or less outlawed the use of newspaper wrapping for fish and chips, though it would appear that some more upmarket places (Rick Stein's fish and chip cafe, etc) may still use it as they buy newspapers for that sole purpose (no pun intended!). The main EH issue with using newspapers is that you don't know where they've been, or who's been handling them, but if you buy newspapers directly from the printers, you're probably OK.
