Saw the programmes about him on BBC Four last night - he's written some damn fine songs hasn't he?
Lyrically and musically, The Hungry Years must be up there amongst the best slow/love songs of all time. Along with Solitaire, though this sounds best sung by Karen Carpenter.
And Love Will Keep Us Together is great too, both his and Captain and Tenille's version. To be honest, I'd forgotten about him for years, and he tends to get lumped in with Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond in a kind of 'New York Nice But Unexciting Musician That Mums Like' category. But seeing these programmes I reckon he's several planes better than Manilow and probably better than Diamond too as a songwriter.

Not a big fan of his but The Hungry Years and Solitaire are great songs. Never realised he wrote Is This The Way To Amarillo until recently

I saw him on stage some years ago, and the catalogue of songs that he's written is vast. He's got a great voice and accompanied himself on the piano, of which his playing was superb. A highly talented man. One of the old school

I liked his updated 90s version of Laughter In The Rain he recorded with his daughter, Dara.

OK. Big admission time here. Several years ago, well at least 15. I managed to see him live in Ipswich and he was amazing. I love The Immigrant which is about John Lennon. He is very gifted songwriter. Maybe not to most peoples tastes. But he has written some memorable tunes over the years.

I think Neil Diamond's last few albums have pulled him firmly out of that category.

love 'breaking up is hard to do'. its the contrast between the poppy, clapping tune and the sadness in the lyrics and vocals that make it great.

I love the song "Going Nowhere" in fact the whole album is superd from start to end.
He is a wonderful artist who never lets himself think he is a better person than his fans.
