What do you think of Selfridges £1,800 Gourmets Pigs?
Would you try one? who do you think would buy these?

Gourmets Pig Out On World's Costliest Ham

The world's most expensive ham has gone on sale, complete with its own DNA certificate as a proof of authenticity.
The leg of Iberico ham, which weighs seven kilos, is on sale at the food hall in Selfridges in London's Oxford Street.

The cost - a juicy £1,800!

The whole process began with 50 animals being specially selected by pig farmer and ham expert Manuel Maldonado.

They were allowed to roam over fields in Extramadura in western Spain feeding on a diet of acorns and roots that help give the ham its distinctive flavour.

Oddly enough, hubby just enlightened me to this story about 1/2 hour ago....lol.

I have heard that ham, especially this quanity, is extremely expensvie in Spain (and even here in the UK) as it is. So it doesn't sound that extreme in relation to the special treatment such as the same with Wagou (sp?) beef.

At Blackhouse restaurant is £50 for a steak of the beef and £20 for a burger!

Wagyu and Kobe are the same thing.

If you go to La Boqueria market in Barcelona you can barely believe the price of some of the ham.

People with more money than sense might buy it.
Probably just to show off to their poncey friends.

Hi,

No. Just the ham and it works out at £25.71 per 100g.

I have tried an expensive Jamon (this sort of ham) in Spain, but I only paid around £15 per 100g. If you like Jamon it is worth treating yourself once in a while to the higher priced, I can say for sure it is worth every penny but only if you like this type of ham.

Hi Andy,

I would buy it. Not because I have more money than sense, but because I like this type of ham, at that price sod my poncey friends that is if I had any poncey friends

It would feature in my top 3 meals. A few slices of Iberico ham, some fresh crusty bread, some great olive oil and balsamic. With a huge glass of Rioja there are few things i'd rather eat.

I cannot believe anyone would pay that much for a leg of ham but there you are.

It's very different to the ham most people eat. It's like asking why people pay that much for the finest vintage wine.

It's just like foie gras or caviar, not to my taste, but if you enjoy it then why not...
