Have searched the forums, and not found anything on this anomaly, so here goes, apologies if I've overlooked anything...

1. A program was broadcast between say 9:00 and 10:00.

2. We paused it from the start, and sat down to watch it at 9:10, so were timeshifted by 10 minutes, expecting to watch it up until 10:10.

3. At 10:00 (when the live broadcast actually ended) the box suddenly returned to the live broadcast. We were able to rewind the last 10 minutes, back to the point where we were thrown out, but it's a real pain.

I'm not sure if it's any better if you do an instant recording, and watch it via the Media button ?

Apart from this, the box is excellent, after a week living with it. Much as I liked Sky+, I could no longer justify the monthly subs.

It is a know issue.

If you are recording the programme you are watching, then it’s best to go into media and play the programme from there.

Couple more questions:

1. Does anyone know if / when Humax may fix it ?

2. If you watch it from the Media button, will it definitely be OK ? (I only ask as there seemed to be a problem last night doing this, while my other half was watching ITV's Wild At Heart in HD), although I think this may have been unrelated because the program did not quite run per the published times.

It's unlikely that they will fix it simply because it's not bomb proof as the tuner you are using to watch in time shift may well be required for a follow up recording. If so the time shift buffer can't be maintained unless the follow up programme is on the same transponder.

Chasing playback of media recordings should be bomb proof as the tuner is allocated already to complete the recording. Just make sure you tune to the same channel so that if you catch up to real time you drop back to the live transmission. I watched Wild At Heart last night in chasing playback after skipping the ads finished watching this about 10 mins after the scheduled start of the dancing results. Watched these in chasing playback again without issues. All recordings were made with auto time settings and set using series recording.

That's a "problem" that all PVRs face - yet only this specific model has chosen to deal with it in this unique way (which renders live-pause almost useless).

Schedule everything. Never watch live.

I agree with 2Bdecided, many other players have this solved. There should never be a conflict unless there are two follow up recordings. If there is a conflict, a minimal solution would be a prompt along the lines of: "your program XXX is scheduled to record. Option: Switch Channel/Cancel Recording".

Humax have done many things really well. This is one bug they really should address.

All the Humax PVRs i've had exhibited this behaviour. (eg PVR8000T) so i'm thinking it's unlikely they'll fix it for just the HDR. It's the only niggle I have with the box now.

I think everyone comes across it at some point. I can live with it, little annoying tho.

I typically set something to record, find out i'm in anyway, so start watching the program live, but pause it to finish making my dinner/get comfortable before I start watching. I leave it recording because I don't trust time-shift that much with my fav shows. If I don't catch up with the live broadcast by fast forwarding the adverts, the time-shifted playback cuts out when the program finishes recording. I've usually only got about 10 minutes of the program left to watch, so then I have to dive into the Media menu and fast forward 50 minutes of the recording to pick up where I left off.

Why not just watch the recording in the first place (It appears in the media list 30sec after recording starts)? If you catch up to real time it simply drops back to the live transmission. The feature is known as chasing playback

I spoke to Humax today, to get their position on this anomaly.

It seems they are aware of it, indeed the PVR is "designed this way".

However, they are aware it's not popular (to say the least) and are now working on a fix, which will hopefully be in the next update, in a month or so's time.

Fingers crossed...

Oh thank God for that. I love this Freesat+ PVR and wouldn't swap it for anything but this bug REALLY annoys me (only one of two things).

A couple of times I've been watching something having paused it for some reason and then when it switches to the live broadcast, I see something I wasn't ready to see (Syed's wedding in Eastenders for example )

(The other thing that annoys me is that my search terms aren't remembered in the EPG, even though it looks as though there's space for saving a list of things).

Can't you rewind live TV which it jumps back to live?

I don't know - after my first bad experience dropping back to live, I've never paused live TV since - but I've read others suggest that it works this way.

No it dumps the recorded buffer and starts recording it again with the current live stream

Personally I don't use the pause live.
It creates all sorts of edge-conditions in the software (in any product). In the Foxsat and other PVRs it often raises the request "how can I turn my pause-live buffer into a recording in the library?"

Well "tough" I say. If you wanted a recording then record it!

Nearly of the programmes I like are set to timer-record. (I have very erratic work end-times).

The only time I use the feature is when something happens unexpectedly, e.g. to rewind and hear something or see something again, but as soon as possible I try to stop and drop to live.

You don't have to fast forward you can use the number keys to jump directly to any playback point. eg pressing 0037 jumps instantly to 37 mins into the recording.

Very sorry to resurrect such an old thread but am seriously looking at getting one of these soon (toss up between this and a 9300T and Topfield 5800/5810) but can anyone confirm if this has been fixed and if so, how is it now implemented?

The way we watched TV with my old 5800 was live pause with recording if required from the buffer fairly frequently so to not have this would be a serious PITA and maybe a deal breaker.

Yes, this "feature" is still there. Other posts indicate that is unlikely to be fixed, ever, on the HUMAX FoxSat HDR.

Sky+ it ain't !

Other annoyances are:

1) A very un-intuitive remote control, with poor range (unless you drop down the front cover of the PVR).

2) No powered RF2 system lilke Sky / Sky+ (it's a £70 workaround).

3) Clunky recording menus etc etc

All this said, I still can't justify the £17 or more to Sky each month, and this is before you consider the excellent HD properties of the HUMAX box. In summary, we are happy !

The one time I think it is most useful is if you fall asleep in front of the TV watching a film but wake before the end, I just don't understand why Humax would not allow the user an option of recording from buffer/program start or from live.

You don't know if you will want to record something until after it starts sometimes. Crazy

Something no-one else seems to have mentioned is a disparity in playback speed.

If you pause a live programme for only a short period of time, say a minute or two and then start watching it, the playback sometimes catches up with the live play. Great apart from it jumps from playback to live before the playback's actually finished so you suddenly jump forwards to live play and miss a chunk of what you were watching on chase play as a result.

This to me is a bigger issue than the one originally mentioned as there's no real way of avoiding this.

If you use the forward skip button rather than fast forward at the standard setting of +2 min it just stops working when you get within 2 mins of the end of the live buffer.

I posted about something similar - where you pause for a few seconds and then when you restart it instantly (or almost instantly) jumps to live.

One of the possibilities mooted was that the Humax is incapable of writing to the (RAM) buffer from which it is playing.

I wonder if the two problems are related in some way.

I also wonder if anyone's actually checked to see if a 30 min recording, played back in its entirety with no pauses, actually takes 30 mins. (Actually, this is made more difficult since the duration stated in the media view is usually (always?) 1 minute shorter than the duration displayed on the progress bar.)

i have been thinking of buying the foxsat hdr for a while now, i was offered a brand new 500gb for £215 today and was very tempted, but i thought i would leave it for a day or two to do a bit more research. well i have just come across this thread and cant believe what i am reading, i often watch programmes on the live buffer (sky at the moment) and i cant believe that the humax will automatically jump to live broadcast while i am still watching a programme, i have never hear anything so stupid. how can people praise this machine with such a major flaw.

since this thread is quite old does anyone have any more up to date info on the problem, do humax plan to do anything about it or do they think it is ok?
