No 5.1 or TrueHD
Hello, I have a sony bdp-s360 connected to ONKYO HTX-22HD 5.1 surround system via hdmi but I'm not getting 5.1 surround with blu ray discs. When I play a regular DVD with 5.1 the Onkyo automatically switches to DD 5.1. With blu rays it does not even give me the option to switch to 5.1. It changes to all channel stereo. Any suggestions guys, bearing in my home cinema is very new to me. Cheers.

I find that most Blurays do not offer both DD and DTS , they have one or the other and I find most are DTS.
If your amp is not set to AUTO then the DTS may well be output as PL2. My son has a Panasonic all in one and while it outputs dvd's as DTS it wont decode DTS from an external source so all the DTS BD output as PL2. Check your amp has the DTS logo on it . Check the settings are on AUTO and try each Bluray's audio setup and you'll likely find many do not have DD 5.1. All my Fox and Buena Vista are DTS. While the Star Trek movies are DD the tv series is DTS and no DD Let us know how you get on |

Thanks both of you. It does have the dts logo. Here's the specs: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/p...roduct_ID/4162
I'm just finding it strange that when I play a blu ray with TrueHd, 5.1 or whatever it's not showing on the amp's display when the instructions tell me it should. But multichannel PCM what grahamlthompson mentioned is displaying. Sorry for being such a novice, I'll get there in the end! |

Yeah it's not sold as 5.1, the surround speakers are optional.

Not all blu discs auto select the lossless sound track, some select the lossy DD track by default. There should be a way to select the correct track, sometimes this is in the Setup menu or Language menu.

Sometimes the non HD audio formats are hidden and not accessible by the menu or the AUDIO button and the player will default to standard DD if your setup is not for HD Audio even though standard DD will not be an option on the discs audio menu The Star Trek XI Blu is one of those. |

if not, then that's probably your answer.
if yes, then are they set up correctly in the Onkyo menus?
How have you adjusted the Sony 360's set up menus for audio out? (see pages 44 & 45 of your manual). You want to have the following options selected...

Audio Output Priority: HDMI
Audio (HDMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio ATT: Off (but this isn't relevant to the HDMI output)
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48kHz/96kHz PCM: 48kHz/16bit (but this isn't relevant to the HDMI output)
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby surround (again not relevant to the HDMI output, but listed here for the sake of completeness)
Phew! After all that you still need to select the HD audio track on many Blu-ray disc menus otherwise you'll get the default Dolby Digital as previously mentioned by others here. The Onkyo's HDMI input set up is much simpler. From what you said earlier I guess you have already set the Onkyo so that the Blu-ray player input defaults to the HDMI socket rather than coax or optical. Hope this helps. |

Hiya, yes I do have the surround speakers and all setting are as you say. All speakers are working and producing an excellent sound. I was just confused with all the different audio types.
