It was a hit and run outside on the road, and we found him out there last night.

He was only 9 months old and had only recently been going outside unsupervised.

I am truly devastated about this, and although he was my sisters cat, it's hit me pretty hard - He was playful, sweet, kind and wouldn't hurt a fly. The whole family adored him.

How long does it take to get over this?

Thanks mimi!

Well in his short time here, he managed to change my opinion of cats, as I was a never fan before

It will take a while to get over it. My sister who lost her dog took a very long time to get back to normality, even now many years after she still gets upset when it's the anniversary.

When everybody is ready maybe you should think about getting another cat. It won't replace the one you have lost but it might fill the gap that you have all been used to having. If that makes sense. At the moment there are thousands of cats needing new loving homes.

And for future reference maybe keep it as a house cat. My vet has always been positive about a cat being kept indoors. It does them no harm, the only time I would ever let my cat out and about is if I lived in the middle of nowhere with very minimal traffic.

Keep your chin up and in very sorry for your loss it must be difficult. But you will get there.

I know the feeling..(well, opinion changing of cats, not losing one) I was never a cat person until I got Winnie. Much rather have cats than dogs now. She's not very affectionate though.

Yeah it was a tricky one, as he absolutely loved going outside - before we got his flap, he would whine by the door, begging to go out, and he was in his element when he was finally allowed to come and go through the flap.

We live in a cul-de-sac, so he'd just hang outside in the close, and as far as I know, he's never been down to the road before. A lot of the time he would just sit in our front garden, and he was sitting there 10 minutes before it happened and didn't want to come in. My brother found him by chance on the way home from the shop...

At least it must have been quick and painless for the little chap

I have suggested a new kitten to my mother, and sister, but they are too upset to consider that at the moment - I think it would be a good idea for them eventually though.

So sorry for your loss. As you say you couldn't have kept him in. It was just rotten luck. I also live in a cul-de-sac and the road is not long enough for speeding traffic, so never had any problem with my cats going to the front of the house. Even though I always let them out the back!

There is a longish side road (residential) near me which is fairly steep with parked vehicles either side and sometimes cars/vans just whizz down (and up) there. It scares me to think that a young child could run out and they would not stand a chance, let alone an animal. No speed bumps either. Motorists just need to take it easy on the quiter side roads.

It was indeed - The poor little thing! He was so curious of everything, and his surroundings, and always wide eyed and excited at anything new! I can't believe he went out like that at just 9 months - Probably got over excited at the flashing car lights and ran into it...The silly sausage!!

Not sure why I decided to post here really, but knew that fellow cat owners would understand how bad it feels to lose a family cat - I wouldn't have been able to understand until I'd had one myself.

I'm amazed at how sad I've been feeling about it today, as I was the one who bonded with him the least out of our family, and I regret that now, as I secretly had a soft spot for him really, and although I've never been a fan of cats, he was slowly winning me over by the day!

So sorry, sleep tight little fella

Mine are indoor cats, I don't live on a quiet road and learnt the hard way that cats will be cats

So sorry to hear this awful tale. It's one of the reasons I could never own a cat, I too live in a cul-de-sac but I'm also near a busy main road. It would tear me apart to lose a pet because I couldn't protect it from harm.

How long does it take to get over it - never. You will always think of them. I do with my two that got run over. But it does get easier, at some point it is not the thing at the forefront of your mind, life goes on I am afraid.
But you will always remember and try to remember the good x

I am so sorry you have lost your puss in such a manner here is a wee verse for you

I just wanted to let you know that I made it home.
The journey wasn't an easy one, but it didn't take too long.

Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh and new
I wish that you could close your eyes and that you could see it too.

Please try not to be sad for me.
Try to understand God is taking care of me...
I'm in the shelter of His hands.

Here there is no sadness, no sorrow, and no pain.
Here there is no crying and I'll never hurt again.

Here it is so peaceful when all the angels sing.
I really have to go for now... I've just got to try my wings.

Thanks for the kind words piper!

He is resting in peace in his own spot in our back garden, so he'll always be a part of the family home in spirit

One of the neighbours cats has been outside our flap all evening, knocking it and purring, probably wondering where his friend has gone - He used to meet him there daily.
