Buying a new camera - Help!
Tictoc79

Hello, If anyone cold give me any advice i would appreciate it. Im buying a new digital camera and am totally undecided as to what to get. I would love an SLR but my budget is around £200 so i just wanna get a really good digital compact type

At the moment im looking at a samsung WB500 as my friend has one and its rather good. Also its 10 x optical zoom and id really like a good zoom as i like to photograph wildlife.

Another friend had a Canon Ixus which took amazing photos but it was an old model.. really good though so i am considering whether to get the new one.

I like photography as a tiny bit of a hobbyish so want something that take clear pics, im not worried about HD video and all that but i do want video with sound.

Can anyone recommend anything? Im so undecided!!!!

Thanks

This is very, very true. And one of the reasons why I dumped my Tosh H20 camcorder and Kodak Z1285 for a Panasonic FT1. Its waterproof, only has 4.6x zoom, but can do the 720p HD video.

The video is absolutely stunning - way ahead of that on the Kodak (which did 720p) and the Toshiba (which could do 1080p). Playback via the PS3 is way better than i could have ever expected.

So definitely - the Panasonics are the ones to look for.

For £200 you are not really going to meet any of your needs.

You can get a very good compact for that amount. Anything above a 5x zoom will be flawed as compromises will need to be made in the manufacture.

Video you can get at 720p, but sound quality will always be an issue. How good do you ant it to be?

I would think about what you really want and how far you want to take it. If you serious then save a bit more and get a DSLR,

I'm in exactly the same position as the OP, I would dearly love a DSLR but cannot justify spending so much on a camera. I'm currently thinking that a megazoom/bridge camera is the best of both worlds, I'm currently considering buying the Fujifilm Finepix s1730 (which apparently only exists at Argos)

£149 for 12Mp and 15x Optical zoom, with a whole bunch of features seems like a pretty good deal to me.

The Fuji S1730 is a steal at £150 (only available from Argos) but there are no details about it yet on the Fuji site despite the fact that they are in stock.
It has the features (plus more) of the S2100HD (an excellent camera) but is cheaper and now has 12MP.

If you want a more compact camera the Fuji F72exr is £170 (only available from Jessops). It has 10x optical zoom, 10MP, but no HD video (although the VGA video is very good and you CAN use the optical zoom) - it's identical to the F70exr but has a glossy black plastic case rather than a metal one. Fuji have a £30 cashback on this model if bought before 31st Jan. so it only cost me £140.

Sorry for plugging the 2 shops but these models are "exclusive" to these shops.

I have the Fuji s1000fd and have been using it for last year. Ok its not a DSLR but it does everything I need for the moment and has taught me a lot for when I am ready to upgrade to something more techy.

I can zoom and fiddle with shutter speed and such like. I can do macro and pretty much anything else I want to do... for now.

Ok I can't manual focus or change lenses but thats for the future.
