Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice really, treated myself to a new TV after xmas so opted for the "best selling" LG LH3000which had fantastic reviews, was affordable and looked great. Got the first set and noticed a "hissing" noise which I couldn't ignore! Did some research and it appears to be a common problem with this specific tv - something to do with software and speaker issues.

Went back to Currys, they were ok about it, arranged a straight swap for a different set, to see if I just had a "dodgy one" this arrived tonight and the noise is worse !! They said I can choose a different model no problems, but now I'm so confused and am looking for advice please!

I'm stuck between the LCD (which I'm not overly impressed with, aside from the hissing, picture's not the best) so do I change completely and get a plasma or try LCD again?? (I'm told it's rare to get a 42'' LCD, only LG seem to do them and I've lost faith tbh) There's not much stretch in my budget and I only want it for basic viewing, nothing fancy ie sky or gaming.

Any advice would be welcome please.. thanks in advance

Personally I like plasma. I feel it gives a more natural image and is better at handling a wider range of sources than just HD.

Panasonic makes some excellent plasma TVs. Currys do the TXP42X10B - a 42" HD Ready plasma for £599. From what I can see that's fairly close in price to the 42LG3000. Something else you'll notice about the Panasonics; for a flatscreen they have very good sound. Much better than the equivalent Samsungs and LGs... and no hiss either

Hi - thank you for you reply !

I heard some bad things about plasma's but mostly when they were relatively "new", screen burn etc...

You must be a mind reader, both tv's you mentioned are the ones I'm struggling to choose between !

Thanks again for taking the time to reply

Yeah, screen burn used to be a concern with earlier generation plasmas that were driving the screens hard to get the brightness. That's less of an issue now, certainly with Panasonic at least, because of advances in screen technology.

You do hear the odd horror story about cheaper plasma brands (Samsung and LG come to mind), but if you scratch beneath the surface you'll often find that the TVs have been left in Dynamic mode which runs the contrast at near maximum. On any new plasma you should run in the set on Normal or Cinema mode and knock the contrast down a bit for the first 100 hours or so. This will prolong the phosphor life.

oooooo you're an expert!!! Thanks again, I'll be storming Curry's tomorrow to get a replacement... fingers crossed I make the right choice

The LG is a lovely looking telly though and I'm gutted really....on the surface it seems near perfect bar the damn hissing noise !! I've been searching the av.forum and found that quite helpful too and full of people having the same problem (albeit they get a bit technical for me!) It could be a "bad batch" but daren't risk it a third time... my sanity's on the way out!

Thanks again Chris
