So does that mean no more paying for the turn by turn instructions?

What's the difference between Ovi maps and Nokia maps? Can I delete one of them?

I guess this was always in the pipeline since Google/Android announced free mapping - although I am not sure if they were going to offer it in Europe.

As an N900 owner - I am still waiting to see if they deem it a suitable addition to their flagship device

First impressions are really good once you download all the maps, voices and stuff it gives you really detailed information about what's around you and the walking directions give you short cuts as well. Definitely gonna try it out with some headphones today.

Ditto that - only thing I don't like on the 900 is the lack of proper navigation.

I just used the GPS to travel across central London and it worked quite well. The voice directions are a little few and far between, but it was generally fairly accurate and when I ran into road blocks, it recalculated around it. Didn't need to take the phone out of my pocket.

According to a post on the Maemo forum, which I did upload before the DS software managed to lose it, there is a few issues with the voice synth being sorted before it comes to the N900.

I read somewhere that the reason for this is that Google does its own maps in the US whereas elsewhere in the world it has to license its maps from another company so it is only able to offer it for free in the US for now. Google is planning to expand its maps outside the US soon though so it can offer the rest of the world free turn by turn.

Apple doesn't own any mapping company so it could have some difficulty competing with Nokia and Android on this one. This can't make companies like TomTom too happy. Although, we get free mapping on the PC so why should we have to pay a premium just to get turn-by-turn on our phones especially when the contracts are so expensive.

This could be the death of the standalone sat nav if it becomes mainstream. TomTom et al are going to have to figure out a new business model.

Nokia Maps is v1 or v2.

Ovi Maps is v3 of Nokia Maps.

Go to settings/general/positioning - you can enable/disable the following :
- assisted GPS - this is the one that uses cell/network data - disable this if you don't want to use any data
- bluetooth GPS - kinda funny on a Nokia that has built in GPS to allow utilisation of an external module.
- integrated GPS
- network based - disable this as well, it'll use data

Have you installed your country to the phone? If not it will download all the map data as required, and that could be why it pulled down 1 meg.

I agree, that is almost certainly what has happened. You need to download map loader onto a computer and pre load the UK into your phone. If successful, you should have minimal data usage.

I only got that map loader late last night so i need to install that. Thanks clonmult i'll test it out later today to see if it doesn't use any data. Can you get speed camera locations ?

And to think I nearly paid for Garmin or Navmii! The only thing that stopped me was I am due to change cars in a few months and I may get one with built in sat nav (probably still will but as free is my favourite price I will have this as well).

This is genius. I have seen some analyst comment on this and even they are excited (which they have not been over Nokia for some time). This is going to change the industry. Not because they are free but because they are high end maps that are free. It has long been concluded that Nokia maps were superior to Google maps. This seriously blows it out of the water.
If you own TomTom shares, you should have sold last week

I have brought the turn by turn navigation in the past (short term - less than a month) and thought that was a good deal. Free is simply awesome!

I wonder if this service will be compatible with the Nokia 6700 Slide when it comes out.
