I tried it out today on a route that I have used the old maps application on and I am afraid to say we came up against a few annoyances:

1: We were on a dual carriageway, the phone said we were going about 67mph yet the voice kept saying something about adhering to speed limits. There were no imposed speed restrictions, I don't know if it was just a warning that we were approaching the speed limit or what, but it was annoying, she wouldn't shut up!

2: It kept recalculating the route for no reason! We were happily driving down a road on more than one occasion, in the direction it was telling us to and it just suddenly did that.

3. The arrow marking our position was about 5 seconds behind where we were, so any quick turns were spoken out after we had already taken them. We knew where we were going, so turned anyway but it would have been problematic for someone who didn't know the route.

It might just be the GPS was a bit screwy. We are going on a longer journey tomorrow, so will give it another whirl, see if she behaves herself this time ... well, it will be he tomorrow as we have decided we don't like the female voice any more .

I want to like it and I want it to work, anything that is decent, works and is free is worth having.

Tried it again today and it was perfect! Was Really quick at locating us and much more responsive and consistent with the routes.

Good stuff!

Updated today but when I try and uses routing it display the route for a short while then says "Online connection needed to connect to Shop" then loses the route which is what it used to do before the update. What am I doing wrong?

It has not been updated!

The way to check is do you get blue screen with options or launched straight into your position? Also check the About and see what version you are using.

To update delete cities folder and qf located in memory card from phone.

Then attach phone to PC Suite. Go to http://maps.nokia.com/explore-services/ovi-maps and open with PC Suite.

You might need to uninstall Ovi maps from phone if this does not work.

Then turn off A-gps and network positiong.

It *had* been updated but not with the new free routing version. When I connected Ovi reported a Maps update which I just assumed was it. I had to go to the Ovi website to get the free routing version.

All done and dusted now and seems to be working although I seem to be getting more reminders from the Positioning Server to go online - used to be just on start up, now seems to be every time I do a place search etc. Speaking of which the address search seems to be more limited. Or does it now take freeform addresses in the Search box?

Not sure, if it requires sending data to your mobile operator for triangulation purposes, then I think you would still incur charges. I know that if I were to use the turn by turn feature on my phone, I would be hit with data charges. I think people should be careful with this sort of thing.

I updated my N95 with OVI 3 maps last night but when I tried to use the navigation it comes up with a message saying "Drive Navigation is a premium service ....." it then comes up with the prices £5 per 30 days £1.50 per day etc
So how is this free?

It does this to speed up the initial identification of you current position. If you can wait a minute or so it will find your position without this. You need to have the Positioning Server turned to Disabled or Ask:-

Settings -> Phone -> Application sett. -> Positioning -> Positioning server

That way you can avoid going online at all when using maps although you get some nag messages when it thinks it would help to do so.

What is the main difference(s) between versions? I saw a phone with no GPS but it had Nokia Maps. I didn't think that was possible?

You will be able to look at the maps and search for addresses and places (such as garages etc) (and calculate a route?) but will not be able find your current location (unless by mobile phone mast triangulation?) or do any turn by turn navigation. So still plenty useful enough to leave the paper map at home (not for hiking in the wilds though folks).

I had this as well after updating the maps. What I did (and I would guess it woiuld work for you as well) was went to the Ovi store and downloaded the Ovi Maps app, this makes it free. Hope it works for you.

So really it is a two stage process. Update firmware and maps first then download free app.

You get a free licence for the Drives but this only lasts for a week. These are trial licences.

no version 3.0.3 is completely free.

Yup. Versions prior to that, as currently available for the previous models, N95, N85, etc. are still pay to play.

Its not beyond the realms of Nokia to delay these releases for a stupid amount of time, or you could just take the alternate route and ... er ... hack the v3 apps.

My 5800 is telling me v.30.0.011 is the latest software, whereas Ovi maps is telling me I need something like v.4 or higher.

Am I confused or is it just another case of 3 being crap?
flagpole

you need version 31

But when I try to update via either my phone or the Nokia software updater it tells me I have the most recent software? Is there anyway around this?

presumably you have a branded version of the 5800, one that is customised by the operator?

you could unbrand your 5800:
http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm

but this has implications for your warranty potentially.

or wait....

Not convinced by all this. Just how many programs downloads ets does it need to install the thing?! Updater, Loader, Downloader it just seems to go on and on.

It would also be nice if it could be fully fine tuned from the PC too!

I tried to install this on my N95 8GB and as TeeGee says its not a simple install .. in the end i got the program on when i started the app my phone froze then switched off.. i had to do a hard reset to fix my phone(!!) then reinstall the maps for the 2.0 version.

Yep it's 3 branded - wondered if it was the case that these sometimes get slower firmware updates than normal!

Cheers.

Operator branded variants always lag on firmwares.

In the case of 3 its down to them not letting you select being on a 2G only network - its forced to dual mode.

Unbranding is very, very easy - change the product code as on the link above, then just use the Nokia Software Updater as you've always done. I've gone through this on the N73, N95 and N85 - no issues ever experienced.
