I just had a phone call from our overseas friends claiming they were BT and offering to stop unwanted calls.

The service would be for life and if any call were received I could contact BT and report them.
They went on to say that I would receive information in the post in a few days.
He then told me there would be a £9.00 one off payment to BT.

I told him no there wouldn't as I'm already registered with the scheme at no cost and the only calls I get now are from BT.

He then said that's fine and asked how long I had been subscribed to Sky TV.

Is this just another money making scheme from BT.

Very unlikely that BT have anything to do with it. Especially as there doesn't appear to be any mention of such a scheme on the BT website.

Nearest I can find is the BT Privacy at Home scheme that signs you up to TPS.

Click on the Security Features tab.

Cheers, It did seem like an odd call especially as they asked for me and the phone is still in my mothers name.

cold call multi tasking,

if you tell them how long you've been subscribed they will then add you to the "Pretend to be sky when their warranty is up/due for renewal" list

Hi F2kSel,

I have read your post and just wanted to clarify a few points. Chrisjr is correct in saying that you can sign up to the Telephone Prefernece Scheme if you have not done so already. The Telephone Preference Scheme (TPS) prevents all sales and marketing calls from UK based companies. All companies are required by law to remove customer details, from their calling lists within 28 days of the customer registering on TPS. Here is a link which may be worth a read through.

http://tiny.cc/XyW7L

It is free of charge to register with this service and no one-off payments are required. Hope that helps.

I just wish I could press a button on my phone and send any unwanted calls I received into a permanent banning bucket so any call coming from that number I decided I did not want to received calls from could not contact me by phone. I hope that this would also pick out selected International call numbers I chose. TPS stops some but not all.

It may upset many crappy companies trying top sell their equally crappy junk I do not want over the phone. Further to that, better to press a button and make the company disappear completely.

.
You can, that is what BTs Choose to Refuse is. It's free for 28 days and then approx £11 a month after that, just be aware it will not stop calls that show as unavailable only witheld.
It will stop numbers that are shown, you can even use it to stop the mother in law calling you, that must be worth £11 a month!!!

Have a look at true call but don't buy it from their website as it's consederably cheaper here.

I've had mine for around six months and it certainly works.

You'll not be able to block specific international calls though, because they generally don't carry caller ID information.

What a godsend, just ordered one. I'm sick of getting calls from robots and suspicious sounding salesman who can barely speak English.

Well I got called yesterday afternoon while at work from an 0800 number (no message left on the answering machine). I'm registered with the TPS through BT Privacy which I took out when I went back to BT a few years back. Called the number last night and got a recorded message from BT saying they had tried to contact me about their fantastic services and they would call them back again. So what's all that about then?

Just an update. BT phoned again yesterday while I was out at work. I rang the number they gave to stop the calls. Spent 20 minutes on the phone to India Call Centre (2different agents) both of whom said that they would set up BT Privacy for me even though I told them I'd already had this set up years ago..............Grrrrrr. If they have rung again this afternoon...........

Further update. BT rang again yesterday afternoon again. I rang BT last night (20 minutes to get through to a person). Told that BT Privacy only lasts for 1 year and that you have to renew it every 12 months - any BT staff viewing can confirm that? Anyway told it will take up to 28 days for that to "work through the system"...............

I bet that gets you locked into a new 12month contract.
