Bought a joint of beef today and forgot to put the shopping away! It's been out of the fridge in a rucksack for an hour and a half, will it be ok? Our house isn't freezing but there's no heating on or anything.

It'll be fine. I've left meat out of the fridge for the best part of a day before now and still lived.

Such hysteria about food nowadays.

This climate of fear is a little silly. Food will not go off at the drop of a hat.
I work in food retail and it irritates me massively that we have to throw out anything that's been left unrefrigerated for 20 minutes.

You should always leave meat out of the fridge to come up to room temperature before cooking. Especially red meat and especially if you like it cooked rare. As the others have said, your joint will be fine.

It's fine. When you've left it out all night in summer and maggots are on it next morning then you should worry.

If it smells off, then chuck it, otherwise it's fine

It'll still be fine. I often take longer than that to get my food home from the supermarket - it doesn't go off in such a short time.

If you put it in the fridge when you posted, then its fine for a few days still.

That's what we used to do with pheasants. Hung them by the neck and when the maggots appeared, they were ready for cooking.

Hi,

You don't need to worry, I have been shopping for beef, pork, chicken and lamb in Australia in 42° and it's been in that heat for an hour or so.

A bit more about beef; The problem with people in th UK they like their meat too red just like the supermarkets sell it.
It has not been hung long enough and has no flavour.

If I was going to have a steak for my supper next Saturday and I don't buy beef from a supermarkets, if it were frozen I would take it out of the freezer on say Monday or even Sunday, as soon as it has defrosted I wrap it in a paper towel to remove the blood.

By Saturday the steak will be looking on the brownish side and have no blood coming out at all.

Saturday night around three or four hours before I am going to cook it I remove it from the fridge, I won't go into what I do with the steak before cooking, but it sits in my kitchen at aroung 70+° until I cook it. So see you really don't need to worry.
