(excerpt)

'Robert "Squirrel" Lester teamed with singers from a rival South Side doo-wop group to form the Chi-Lites, which scored chart-topping hits in the 1970s with "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her."

Mr. Lester, 67, died of cancer Thursday, Jan. 21, in Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago, said Marshall Thompson, a fellow original Chi-Lites member. He was a South Side resident.'

That's a shame.

I love "Are You My Woman" and "Have You Seen Her?", great songs.

I love "Have You Seen Her?" Certainly in my top 100 songs of all time. Always sad when singers of favourite songs pass away.

i could not abide them or their brand of soul .... imho philly / sweet soul was the worst ever genre of music.. 99% of tracks i hate to the point of anger and disgust.

... but its always sad when somebody dies, i might not have liked his music but i dare say he was a good family man.. (guessing).

Another lover of Have you seen her? here. One of my favourite songs when I was growing up. RIP.

That is a real pity. My favourite Chi-Lites single is definitely "Too Good To Be Forgotten" (pretty well covered by Amazulu in the 1980s) as it is so infectiously catchy and uplifting. I think "Too Good To Be Forgotten" has a little extra poignancy now.

As a big soul fan, I have to say I love the 'Philly Sound'.

Stax soul first for me, Philly 2nd, Motown third. Also a big fan of Northern Soul and the late 60's Atlantic releases.

And lets not forget great British soul either.

Well, I'd prefer not to, but the lack of investment and promotion in the likes of Mica Paris, Incognito, Caron Wheeler, Nash and Linx means that it is rather difficult. Not least when the gimmicky likes of N Dubz have pushed genuine talent out of the way.

mushymanrob, I think you need a drink. Shouldn't 'anger and disgust' be reserved for the likes of The Saturdays?

The Philly sound is brilliant. Gamble and Huff are fantastic songwriters and what they achieved is second only to Motown's achievements.

LOL

Actually I was meaning more the 60's/70's British soul: Dusty, Jimmy James, The Real Thing, Average White Band, Hot Chocolate, Sweet Sensation...
