My dog is having an allergic reaction
missholland

I'm so worriedYesterday evening one of our girls started shaking her head repeatedly and I noticed her head and face were puffy.Today I took her to the vet on duty and she gave her a cortisone injection in her muscle- she said it must be some sort of allergic reaction but we have no idea what it could be I'm racking my brains thinking if she's eaten anything she shouldn't have on our walk- but I haven't seen anything. Her ears are really swollen at the moment;the injection isn't doing much good so far
She's also not herself- she seems tired and listless and she's usually VERY energetic. When I walked home from the vet's I noticed she was sluggish so I went right back- and she said she didn't have an explanation for that, her temperature was normal, also her heart, her breathing, everything was okay.If the swelling isn't gone by nine o 'clock this evening I have to give her some pills;dexamethason.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? The vet told me not to worry but I do
Thanks in advance for any advice..

As you're still worried, how about ringing the on-call vet and asking for further advice/reassurance?

One of our cats had an allergic reaction to Metacam (on a Saturday evening of course) and we rang the emergency the vet who advised us. In his case half a piriton and a subsequent steroid injection did the trick.

I've already done that.I'm supposed to ring back at 9,when I have to give my dog the pills.(If the swelling hasn't gone by then)She's asleep now.

The important thing is that her airway is clear and the reaction has peaked.

As long as she doesn't get any worse, just stick to the vets instructions. Both steroids (the cortisone and dexamethason) should help. Has the vet recommended/prescribed an antihistamine like Piriton? If not then maybe ask when you call them if it is OK to give & the dosage.

Is there anything you can think of that set off this reaction? A new cleaning product in the house? Anything she might have eaten on a walk? This time of year it wouldn't be bees or wasps, but could she have tried to eat a spider?

Hope she's feeling better soon

our miss used to do this every now and then
full face would swell
no explanation for it, but she got really restless when it happened and would move about the house constantly
we gave her a piriton tablet and usually it went away completely, or mostly, by morning

it's really not nice to see and i hope the swelling goes down soon

Thanks for your replies.
She's much better today- the swellings have all gone.I gave her the dexamethason yesterday evening, and I spoke to the vet again this morning.I have to give her one more dexamethason again this evening.she didn't mention the anti-hysthamines(I hope I spelled that correctly in English)
I hope they won't be necessary...
We still have no idea what caused it...
She does have a habit of picking things up on our walks, and sometimes I'm just too late to take it off her
I haven't been using any new or exotic detergents or anything. It remains a mystery up till now....
I'm so relieved she's back to normal
I just hope & pray it doesn't come back...
Thanks again for replying
