What was that?

How is he going to give a range of marks if he gives Hayley a 3? That could be the best score he gives out all night.

Terrible benchmarking.

Very odd. Someone will be inexplicably overmarked later imo.

The only logic was start in the middle and mark around it which would mean a couple of people getting 3s perhaps a 4 and lots of 2s and 1s. In his case probably given randomly......

1.0 for Dr Hilary LOL

His logic of setting a benchmark was TERRIBLE. We know based on past form that Hayley COULD be the best performer tonight. That means he only has 1-2.5 for the other couples, whereas Karen has 1-4 for everyone else.

Ludicrous marking from Nicky - there will be few better than Hayley tonight, so a 4 would have given plenty of leeway should anyone else give a superior performance.

As for being slow across the ice - wasn't he listening to the music> It was a slow piece for heaven's sake.

I normally respect Nicky's judgement but tonight - oh dear no!

Kieron 2.5 now oh dear

Skaters don't slow way down because the music is slow.

Or, if you don't like that point, she should have picked different music.

At least Nicky is pointing out the weaknesses in her routines rather than gushing about how wonderful she is.

She is not so significantly slower than everyone else than it deserves a drop of 1.5. I know you took an instant dislike to Hayley, but look at her relative to everyone else. Relative to most of the other skaters, 3 is ludicrous.

3 still Nicky's best. What a ballsup.

So long as Nicky marks the other skaters in relation to that benchmark, then I don't see the problem.

And he seems to be doing just that - we've seen him dish out plenty of scores under 3.0 tonight.

It doesn't really matter though, as long as the overall position on the leaderboard is right, the scores don't make a difference. As long as he is marking relative to each other, which he is, as nobody else has received a 3. Having said that, I think 4 would have been a better benchmark to give him a wider range of scores!

They do if the choregraphy says move from there to there slowly in time with the music? The skaters/celebs don't pick teh music , or the choregraphy.

The problem is that he has less scores on which to grade the couples. He will be forced to give some couples the same score when if he had used a bigger range he could have separated said couples.

Nicky has used this scoring method a few times before, it always seems unfair, I've never understood it in the past and I don't understand it now tbh! He always comes over as stroppy when questioned about it too!

Did Hayley pick the music?

Nope. Jayne and Chris pick the music.

As I understand it on DOI they are given the choregraphy which suggests the music comes with it. T and D wouldn't want to design choregraphy for music they didn't pick and might not want would they? On SCD they might get to suggest the music but they get given a song per dance which they choregraph themselves.

Its a bit of a lottery whether you get something dull or too hard or some music thats forgettable and leads to some dire dancing or something that leads to a great routine. Madonna is good for dancing to ..........Music and Frozen went to people who could use them

unfortunately on the singing shows whats good to dance too is often too distinctive to sing to. so its a lottery there too.......

Nicky's under-marked practically everyone tonight I thought, what was he thinking giving the fantastic ones 3s !?

In hindsight the 3 was reasonable for Hayley. At least that kept her in contact with the rest, which she should be at the very least, instead of miles ahead for some bizarre reason.

It was off, but at least it was consistently off.

Yes I found Nicky's marking odd too. IIRC he justified it by saying that there were more people to mark this week, but I do feel Hayley deserved higher than a 3. It meant that really poor performers had to be given 1 by him whereas the other judges had given themselves more leeway so could afford to be more generous. Does this make sense, I'm stressed to the gills and feel a migraine coming on!!

Exactly.

So long as it's "off" in a consistent direction, that should be no problem.

What makes a difference to the leaderboard is the differences among a judge's mark, not the particular numbers he or she happens to use.

It doesn't matter if a judge marks low compared to other judges or to what marks a viewer would have awarded. What matters is the differences among the judge's own marks.
