iPhone / Touch OS 4.0 requests
This is obviously not an official thread and probably no way to get it to Apple but I am wondering what people want from the next OS update.
My votes go to : 1) Unlocking of the alledged hidden FM tuner to allow for live radio without internet 2) Theme support - even if only restricted to Apple themes 3) Push notifications within the device that don't rely on net connection. 4) Better multitasking 5) tweaks to 3g and wifi power saving to improve battery life Anyone have any other ideas? |

Battery life and the fact that tethering costs extra are the only reasons that I have not gone iPhone.
Using the iPod Touch has shown me what a great device this is but I really rely on my phone for work so would be worried about playing with it. |

The battery life is not too bad, I have seen far worse. I can go over a day without charging mine and that is using all features, although if camera is used a lot then it does need charging.
For me: 1) To use the handset all the time in landscape mode. 2) Better battery life. 3) FLASH. |

Only thing I can think of is Themes. It practically does everything else I need.

I would recommend doing a restore in iTunes - that seems very unusual to be needing to charge that many times a day. It is possible one of the apps has ended up having a corrupted install or something and is continuously burning through your battery - a restore should hopefully sort that out. No need to worry about your settings or data - all that will be restored.

A popup shortcut which allows you to change brightness, toggle 3G, Bluetooth, GPS and Airplane mode instantly without going through the settings menu and closing your current app.
I use something like this on my Jailbroken iPhone and battery life is much longer. |

I know what I would like and it is probably hardware related and not possible, but I would love to be able to disable that little mute button. I am often accidentally muting it in my pocket and missing important calls.

Bluetooth file transfer to/from any phone with Bluetooth.
More options on the e-mail app. Get Google to update their map app to include turn-by-turn navigation... although given they have their own mobile platform now, that's probably not gonna happen. Could they find a way to implement compatibility with scrolling CSS windows within Safari? Ability to choose any sound for text alerts. Connect to wifi quicker. A character counter for text messages. And as other(s) have said, multitasking ability for 3rd party apps. Anything else would require a hardware upgrade or fundamental policy changes at Apple. |

Hi Dark 1, you just reminded me about the wifi. Something that annoys me is that it always loads my default wifi last on the list after loading other wifis in the area. It shoudl really go to your default location first before the others.

As I understand it, that would also require a hardware change. The chip inside may be FM capable, but the aerial is not.

This may not be a problem though, many mobile phones use the headset as an aerial?

Yes indeed, it wouldn't be a problem to implement with a hardware upgrade - after all the Nano has an FM radio now - but it's more than a software update away.
Of course it is only rumour, but it may happen. |

I'd like to see much more options to the 'home' screen. Folders to store apps in, ideally some information boxes (like a Twitter app always being displayed - I think some Nokias can do this). Apps being able to change their icons (eg Yahoo could push an icon to the weather app to reflect today's weather).
As great a platform as it is, there's still a lot of room for improvement. |
