Why do hamsters fight?

Just wondered why Syrian Hamsters are so violent towards each other. They fight to the death!!

Because they are solitary, competitive animals
Other than briefly, to some of the opposite sex , during the breeding season, for obvious reasons.
However even then they can sometimes fight very badly if they don't like each other, or one gets the timing wrong

as tass said. they're simply just a solitary species.

maybe it's for resources, perhaps they evolved in an area with limited resources and being solitary was the only way to ensure their survival

I think you've hit the nail on the head! I don't know much about hamsters but don't they come from desert or semi-arid areas? If so, resources such as food & water would be in short supply so having a territory large enough to provide them with all they need would be vital ~ hence the possibility of fighting hard to keep it.
