I would say No since technically the phone is Unattended at the time of loss.

You should always send valuble items by either Special Delivery or Insured Courier though.

I sent it SD 1pm, via the Royal Mail.

I paid for the postage via PayPal and it got handed in at a post-office, but i didn't get a tracking number...

Nowhere on the PayPal postage receipt does it state that you need to get a tracking number from the PO!
I thought it was all done online.

If you sent it Special Delivery then it's insured automatically upto £500 so maybe start a claim with RM

Im worried they will turn round and say "since you didn't get a tracking number, you have no proof of posting"

You would have been given a receipt?

They always give you a receipt unless the Postie behind the Inch thick glass was a tea leaf...
