I have a bit of Mozart on my ipod and those were composed around the 1700's but obviously aren't original recordings

in terms of original recordings I have Skip James stuff which dates back to the 30's among them is a song called "Devil Got My Woman" which is sublime

Not particularly old compared to some of your choices, but I've always loved Yesterday by The Beatles. I like the Supremes, Roy Orbison and Elvis as well.

I only have eyes for you written in 1934 covered by Peggy Lee, Art Garfunkle and Peggy Lee to name but a few!

Best version is by The Flamingos though, ranked by Rolling Stone (and me!) as one of the best songs ever so check it out!

Love that record! It's kind of spooky.

I love the old depression era song 'Brother Can You Spare A Dime'. I've no idea who first sang it but it must be from the late 20s.

the song itself is very old, but the version isn't. Paramore did a live acoustic version of this song tour.

Oldest song - probably New Orleans (aka New Orleans Blues, House Of The Rising Sun, Rising Sun Blues etc). I don't think anyone really knows who wrote it and when. Scarborough Fair too, which is even older.

The oldest recordings I have are of Charley Patton (1929), Son House (1930) and Leadbelly (first recorded by the Lomaxes some time around 1935), also Robert Johnson who would have been about the same time but I don't know the exact year.

God, you had me going there! I had to check your post history to see whether or not you were joking (sorry).

Even my Brother likes songs older than that, and he tends to discard them after a couple of months!

Aside from Greensleves, probably something by Billie Holiday (mid-40s), Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, etc.

Gaudete is a hymn believed to date from the middle ages, but could actually go back a lot further to post Roman times. That is possibly the oldest known written hit, made by Steeleye Span in 1973.
Other than than, 'This Is My Song' by Petula Clark was written by Charlie Chaplin in his latter years.

Probably the oldest recording I have apart from those that could be described as a well known song and where both writer and singer were still alive when the song was recorded would be Over The Rainbow by Judy Garland.

If you dont count classical music, of course, or traditional folk songs.

(Yes of course the singer would have to be alive....)

Haha, sorry! That's what happens when you're sitting at college with nothing to do...

Seriously, I like a lot of Elvis/Chuck Berry/early Motown stuff, but I think it's Please Please Me onwards (1963) where I start to get numerous favourites.
