I'm finding myself to enjoy more 'older' stuff now so yes I do enjoy listening to Stevie Wonder. Others to consider listening to also: Roberta Flack, Donnie Hathaway and Aretha Franklin.

look at the "classic period" that's all the great stuff

start with talking book, then innervisions, then fulfilliness first finale, then songs in the key of life (a double - another good starting point)

it then goes wonky from journey through the secret life of plants, which is an experimental (read: druggy crap) concept album about plants. from the description i think you should be able to tell how bad it is (if you are sober at least)

hotter than july is okay, but stevie committed serious musical crimes in the 80s with tracks like i just called to say i love you, and ebony and ivory with the bloke from wings

buy the four classic period albums, and you can't go wrong, there isn't a duff track, every track is fantastic

btw, stevie not only writes and sings, but plays most instruments on most of his tracks, drums, guitar and keyboards. check the record credits

didnt like but respected his 70's material

didnt like and didnt respect his 80's material ..... i mean ... 'lately', 'i just called to say i love you'... could it really be the same bloke who wrote 'i was made to love her, worship and adore her'.. id rate as one of the most poweful soul/love songs ever written

I'd agree with much of this - up to a point ...

Stevie's late 60s and entire 70s output is astonishing. The Secret Life Of Plants is flawed but not entirely dismissable - but it's overshadowed by all his other albums from that decade. Only David Bowie was more consistently excellent in the 70s (IMHO).

And I'd argue that Hotter Than July is an absolute return to form. It's easy to dismiss 'Happy Birthday' after it's been overused in its most basic interpretation, but its political impact - based on what the song is actually about - is extraordinary. I'd rank 'Masterblaster (Jammin')' and 'All I Do' among his best. And I certainly wouldn't bracket 'Lately' with 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'!

The pickings do indeed get thinner in the 80s but there are still gems to be found: 'Love Light In Flight', 'You Will Know', 'Overjoyed' and 'Dark And Lovely'. All worth looking into.

As for where to start, I'd nominate Songs In The Key Of Life: a groundbreaking set that really showcases Stevie's versatility. iTunes it if you'd prefer, but I'd thoroughly recommend searching for a bargain price deal for the whole double-CD set. It's worth it.

Lately is tremendous.

Livin' For The City is one of the best songs ever written imho, especially the album version which goes on for ages and has a talking bit in the middle.

Absolutely. It's a jaw-dropping piece of pop music - and virtually inconceivable that you'd find such a cutting piece of social commentary on a best-selling album nowadays.

"You and I" - fantastic vocals and lyrics

And this is also my favourite live performance by him EVER. He's singing "I Won't Complain" at Luther Vandross's funeral.

I like Stevie Wonder, I have a few of his better known tracks on my iPod. He rightly regarded as one of the better songwriters of his generation and he has influenced many an artist following after he started.

Love him. An extraordinary talent.

The sequence from Talking Book ... Innervisions ... Fulfillingness First Finale ... Songs In The Key Of Life is one of the greatest sequences of albums anyone's ever issued IMHO.

Love him (apart from some dodgy 80s stuff e.g. ebony and ivory). I truly think he's a genius - if you look at something like superstition and realise just how complex some of the orchestration is.

Truly a lovely charismatic guy too - I saw him live about 18 months ago and he was amazing (apart from leaving all the old stuff until the end of the set and trying to flog his newer not so good stuff most of the way through).

got most of his stuff from music of my mind through to characters looking to get rest of his albums at some point-think my best songs are Something Out Of The Blue from Where I'm Coming From and Overjoyed. Don't know why people give Ebony and Ivory a hard time I quite like it

Yes I think he is good. I'd say the 6 songs of his I like best are

I Was Made to Love Her (Was he really only 16 when he wrote it?)
Superstition
Living for the City
He's Misstra Know It All
I wish (Much preferred it to Isn't She Lovely and was thankful this was released as a single instead)
Master Blaster Jamming

He lost his way a bit in the 80s but still wrote a remarkable amount of good stuff
