We used a dog cage, they dont like weeing in the same place they sleep so as soon as she was let out in the mornings we took her straight into the garden to pee, and when she did we would reward her.

After every meal we also took her outside and if she did something then there was always a treat, the same if we took her for walks.

By that method she was house trained within 1 week.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you OP. My cockapoo is 7 and a half months old and she hasn't got a scooby doo! We take her for long walks and she does nothing, yet as soon as we get back in she does it in the hall, kitchen etc.

Last night she pooed and wee'd in her crate and it took us half an hour to clean her and the crate. It's ruining things completely because we're getting to the stage where we can't be bothered with her any more.

If I leave her alone for an hour to go shopping, I come back to a complete mess in the kitchen.

We're at our wits' end

wow i really feel for you both, must be awful to live with. ive always toilet trained dogs by taking them out religiously every 20-30 mins for 5 mins, if they dont do anything they are called in, only to repeat in another 20 mins or so. its never failed, and has also worked with older dogs too. albeit very hard work, especially through the night (took them out hourly) but it only took around a week for each one to learn through huge praise when they did go outside even as they were still going, and putting them out while i cleaned up any mess they happened to do. i hope you manage to sort it soon-good luck

We take our 4 month old Cav out on walks 4 times a day, so normally, before breakfast, before lunch, before tea and then before bed. Also, she gets crated for 20 mins after feed and then taken out. The crate was the best thing I spent money on for her =] If she needs the toilet any other time she'll start barking, so we take her outside. Overnight, she has a puppy pad by the back door which is religiously uses and whines if she misses cos she feels bad =]

However the disadvantage of using puppy pads is that when we first got them, she would put her front paws on it, and think she was standing on it, and then go toilet, so we'd have to clean it up. Sure puppy pads may encourage her to toilet inside, however we only use it at nighttime or when she is left alone during the day, and she knows to bark before needing toilet during the day.

I'd say the best way to do it, is to take her out on plenty of little walks a day and then toilet in the back yard every 30 mins once you're back home. And also, just ignore her if she messes in the wrong places etc.

From experience you should get to know your dog's bowel movements. I knew my Impossible Princess' when she was a kitten. She was trained in no time at all and then I didn't have to worry about messes in the house as she used her cat flap.

Why not get a dog flap? That would make things easier.

Our new dog is almost 2 but he weed and pooed in the house a few times before we got his toilet routine figured out. What we did was create a chart of all the times he weed, pooed, was fed, and went for a walk. It took three days of watching him like a hawk and taking him out to the loo every half an hour to spot the pattern. Then we just let him out at the times on the chart that he likes to wee, poo etc and leave him there till he does something.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I'm no expert, theres some really great advice on here but i think that some dogs just dont get it until they want to or it just clicks!

Had Alf from 8 wks was trained within a week following the advice given on here which is much the same given to you.

Alf is now over a year old and never had a problem since except one time following a boozy BBQ when he got over fed - one carpet down!!!

Have had Lola for over 2 months now have tried everything I know and have been advised to no avail. She will go when I put her out which I do every 30 mins as much as possible but it seems if shes in the middle of doing something she will pee - she doesn't care where, its not in the same spot it is where ever she feels the urge - (thinkin about renaming her Martini). Shes knows shes done wrong as after she does it she lays on her back and thats how we know shes peed somewhere!!! She does sleep in a cage and now we are at the point where we feel we should use the cage when we are at home which is something I would rather not do, however, its true that they will not soil where they sleep.

I can understand your frustration - i'm there!!

Perhaps girls are harder to train....

had a littlle success today at last , returned from shopping and after putting the shopping away i let her out . the women from next door was out side and i was talking to her and my dog did a pee , after fussing her i went in and fed her a treat . she then started going round in circles so i let her out again and she did her other buisness , so i gave her an other treat then fed her . success at last , thx all for the advice

We have all been through it from time to time and we need a lot of patience... we have always had several dogs and if a pup has been introduced, we've always had an older dog for the pup to copy out in the garden or out on a walk.

This time it has been double the work for us because we had two baby Basset Hounds together, but as they also copy one another, as well as our older dog, toilet training hasn't been too bad... and we have the odd accident but I blame myself rather than the dogs, for not letting them out sooner!

I think it's important not to show our dogs we are 'stressed' if their bad habits make us feel stressed, because they can sense all of our feelings, good and bad!!!

When mine were young pups, (until about 14 months of age) they had Eukanuba puppy, that I moistened with warm water from when they were first with us at nine weeks of age, until they were about three months old as it was easier on their baby teeth. Also mixed in some Butchers' tripe for more taste. It must have been good because they are both very strong, big, healthy looking Bassets. I also give them a Cod Liver Oil capsule (pricked open and squirted onto their food) once a day and they have lovely coats.

I don't know about everyone else, but I find 15kg bags of dog food more convenient to store than loads of tins of food, but I do buy a few tins of Butchers' tripe as well as the big bags of Eukanuba and I chop in a tablespoon of the Butchers' tripe with the dried food.

I also often cook them some cauliflower, carrots, potato and swede or do extra veg for us so I can give it to the dogs as they will eat anything and are not at all fussy eaters... and I think some veg is good for them and adds some interest to the dry food. They also love raw carrots and cauliflower.

I feed mine twice a day, in the morning they have a reasonable portion of wet food so that they are unlikey to want to have a big poo whilst im at work. In the evingin they have wet food plus a dry mix and then taken for a long walk about 20 mins after. Alf will always poo twice Lola will wait till she gets indoors lol

Forgot to say that when mine were young, up to about almost 4 months, I fed them four times a day with small meals to suit their tummy size and then up to when they were about 7 months they a larger amount divided into three times a day and built the amount up gradually until they were about just over a year old when they were fed twice a day but a snack at lunchtime or some treats in their ball to push around and eat what falls out!

I never ever walk my dogs within an hour of feeding and neither do I ever feed my dogs within an hour of having a good walk either, as dogs can get 'bloat' if fed/walked too close in time... long dogs like Bassets and Daschunds etc or deep chested dogs could get bloat (torsioned stomach) that could kill them, so that's why I am very careful about when I feed and walk!

the lady who i purchased my pup from said do not give her tinned food as it gives them cancer , surely this is incorrect ? . mind you the last dog i had died with cancer and had canned food from 6 weeks old till her death at nearly 15 years old

If you haven't done so already, I would definitely consider getting a crate - with a few exceptions, the majority of pups really don't like messing their bed area.

You need really to go back to basics - don't have paper or puppy pads - as these simply tell them it is OK to toilet in the house.

Take her out every half hour to an hour, before and after food and when she wakes up. You MUST stay outside with her until she does toilet - and then praise her to the hilt - a nice treat and lots of fuss when she does go.

=====================

Re: food - you can guarantee whatever you feed your dog (dried, tinned, raw or homecooked), there will be negative scare stories about it.

You need to find the best food for your dog that keeps her in optimum condition. I am not the biggest fan of dried food - but with 6, it is the most convenient and economical method of feeding.

If you have less dogs / more disposable income, there are new grain free foods dried foods imported from Canada now available such as Arcana and Orijen.

Five of mine are on dried food and then I top up with bones, fish, meats every now and again - and one on tinned food - and they all thrive on what they get.

Try and avoid foods with artificial colourants and additives - because they have have a similar effect on dogs and puppies to children
