Is it normal for the iPhone to randomly turn off and come back on again?

Mine' been doing this for a while and I've just put it down to the iPhone crashing, like any computer does.

It usually happens when there's a large program running or I have a lot of browser windows open.

I'll be using it and the screen will just go blank.

I'll push the home button 3 or 4 times and nothing happens. Then, after 30 seconds or so, the white Apple logo appears and the iPhone starts up again with everything closed,

Sounds like you are using too much memory,if your phone is jailbroken try the Backgrounder app and/or use Springboard to free up memory .

This.

If you (the OP) don't know how - it's simply a question of pressing the button marked Restore in iTunes when you connect up your iPhone. It will do a full backup of your iPhone, then reinstall the firmware and then ask you if you want to set it up as a new phone or from backup (choose from backup). Finally it will sync everything back up again. Should end up in exactly the same state it was before the restore (settings, data, messages etc.), though hopefully without the rebooting issues.

The process can take quite a while (especially if you have lots to sync), but it normally sorts out these sorts of problems, which thankfully are usually very few and far between with the iPhone. If you are still having problems then it suggests to me a hardware issue so probably worth booking an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple store (if you have one nearby), or contact Apple support from their website. Apple store tends to be the best bet as they can normally just issue you with a brand new replacement there and then if there is a fault with the handset (no messing about with sending it off for repair or anything like that).

Sounds like it could do with a Restore got to do that to mine laters the battery life is terrible on it lately plus it refuses to switch off now but if the battery dies it will switch back on via the power switch,
