Leaving O2 - will I be able to use my iPhone as an iPod?

hiya

I'm out of contract on O2 and I'm planning on switching carriers / handsets etc...

Once I'm all cancelled down, do you know if I will still be able to use my iPhone as an iPod? so basically keep all the iPhone 3G functionality minus telephone / mobile data capabilities?

Thanks and sorry if this has been answered a million times before!

Before you leave O2 you may as well get them to officially unlock it for you - they'll do this for free while you are in contract - just fill in the form on this page of their site. That way you can use whatever network SIM you like in it (though it will still work just fine without a SIM if that's what you want).

thanks for that! I'm getting the Blackberry Storm 2 on Vodafone, so if it's awful, presume I will be able to stick the SIM in the iPhone instead?

Or is there some contrived techno gubbin in the background that will only let the phone work on a new network if that network activates your SIM for iPhone usage?

No that would work fine. So keep the new phone in good condition and sell it if you're not keen!

You will need to make sure you have an internet allowance on the Vodafone contract or it will cost a fortune (alternative is to turn internet off, but you wouldn't wanna do that would you!). All you will have to do is update you internet and MMS settings on the iPhone - Vodafone can give you this info.

The only possible drawback is that you might be on a Blackberry tariff - not sure if that would be a problem in terms of your internet. Even if that was the case, Vodafone might be able to change the tarrif for you. Somebody who knows about Blackberry tariffs will probably help you on that.

If you sick a Voda sim into an iPhone and connect it to iTunes you will get a carrier update through which automatically sets the handset up for you..
