Man alive, some of those are terrible. I like The Animals version best, although I admit I couldn't bear to listen to them all.
![]() Thanks for the Josh White though, I hadn't heard that one before. |

For me it's Muse, hands down. I can see why people won't like it - but I love that it sounds so different to others, especially the Animals version, which was the first I ever heard.

Prefer Animals version over all of them, but the best cover of it has to be Muse.

The Tangerine Dream cover is somewhat different.

You are aware that the Animals version was a cover as well?
If so, I would consider them to be more covers of the Animals, than the ancient folk version ![]() It's a bit like if someone covers Misirlou or When the Levee Breaks or Crossroads. Those songs were changed so much from the originals by the bands that covered them, they're practically new songs. |

Are most of those covers based on the animals arrangement?

I was questioning the sentence "The Animals version was the best, but the best cover is Muse" though, as to me it sounded like the poster thought The Animals was the original version, which is entirely fair, as I thought it was their song too until a couple of years back. Still prefer Leadbelly's

The Animals. For me it's the definitive version.

Of course The Animals' version is the best but I love this one by Walls of Jericho:
