I've gave in, in a moment of weakness, to an Iphone... thinking it would be the last thing in sophistication..

So far, I've found that I can't use my own music as a ringtone, I've found that I cant appear to buy ringtones on Itunes, I've found that I'm going to have to relearn how to text - possibly, or possibly not being forced into using predictive text, and I've found that Apple appear to have upped the price of music to 99p a song !

I can't see this relationship working out.. and I am *so* glad I've held off buying a Mac now !

Thank god for cooling off periods on contracts !

you can convert mp3 to ringtones although its not exactly a quick process - see http://www.ehow.com/how_2160460_cust...ones-free.html

i also think there's a web site out there somewhere that will automatically do it for you... can't remember the url

also you arent forced to just get mp3s from the istore to put them on your phone. half of mine are either free or from amazon.

and it also has predictive texting... maybe you need to give it more time to build up the dictionary. predictive texting works fine on mine.

I don't have an iPhone but I'm pretty sure you can use your own music for ringtones and you can buy them from iTunes as far as I know.

Texting, are you talking about having to use a QWERTY keyboard?

thanks for that... I know you're being helpful.... but...

If I can turn predictive text off with Nokia, why have Apple decided you cant on the Iphone ?

All the songs in my Itunes are MP3 I think, so shouldn't they work ?...

This smacks of typical brand arrogance to me - lets make something thats less flexible, with fewer choices and lets rip people off where we can for making choices and, if we put it in a thin shiny case, everyone will want one !

No, its seems that you cant. Apparantly, you can use full songs or something like that.. I'm only 29, but Apples kinda of technology just isn't clicking at the minute...

The qwerty keyboard I can cope with, its the fact it tries to guess what word you want to type and never gets it right. You can turn this off on every other phone, but I dont think you can on these.

i guess they figure that predictive texting being on isn't something that would annoy anyone. if the prediction is wrong then you just continue to type regardless.

yes, you can use the mp3s you have on your PCs itunes to convert to ring-tone. you just need to follow that guide. it does suck that there isn't a way to autocreate ring tones in itunes for mp3s not bought from them but i guess that is something apple had to agree to with the record companies so you can't really blame them for that.

i guess i just find your reasons for not liking it to be a bit trivial... is the ringtones and predictive texting it?

You can turn predictive texting off.
Settings>General>Keyboard and then turn 'Auto-Correction' off.
If you have purchased music off iTunes, you can right click on the track and there will be an option to create a ringtone in the menu; not sure if it charges you for the privilege, though.

But with Nokia, and Blackberry I think, you download their software CD, drag your itunes songs across into their application and you have your ringtone.. Nokia didnt need the permission of the record companies !

The two reasons are the two I've found so far... Im guessing they'll be more.... I agree the issues are small in themselves, but my complaint is that every other phone maker seems to have got right the thing Apple wont let you do on the Iphone..

Im 99% sure it'll be back off to Vodafone tomorrow to be swapped for a Blackberry Bold 9700...

You can use any ringtone you like, as long as it's under 30 seconds long. Sites like zedge.net and audiko.net have done all the hard work for you. Just download them free and drag and drop them into iTunes.

You can buy ringtones from iTunes - go into it and at the bottom in the middle of the app it says 'Ringtones'.

You can turn predictive text off. How do you think I cope? I'm welsh first language and I manage!

Some songs are 99p, some are more and some less. Nothing stopping you getting them from Amazon, Tesco, Play, Limewire, uTorrent etc.

If you can't be bothered researching before getting in a huff and throwing your toys out of the pram, perhaps you should take it back then within the cooling off period and get yourself a Nokia 6300

well nokia don't offer to sell you mp3s either.... i think that where the difference lies. but you can make ringtones from mp3s that apple can prove you've purchased - ie. through the istore. anyway, i find that after putting on a couple of mp3s the novelty quickly wares off.

unfortunately you will have to follow the guide already posted to have custom ringtones, they need to be an m4a (aac) track then rename the extension to m4r then when imported to itunes it is recognised as a ringtone MP3 files are not recognised as ringtones nor can be used as ringtones.

What's even more bizare is you cant then use the ringtones as ringtones for text messaging etc...... madness

haha they do? okay my bad. well, it wouldnt surprise me if apple force you to use their mp3s through itunes. they've done this kind of stupid crap before. but its hardly a deal breaker for me. the crappy camera, dodgy phone call quality and no flash support annoy me more.

Does suck to be so 'tight', but can't be that bad otherwise they wouldn't be so popular and still outselling so called 'iPhone killers' that are released every other month!

Fear not of flash support - the iPhone/iPad will never support it! Html5 is the future!!
YouTube is currently testing it now with brilliant results! Much less of a resource hog and much faster loading. Safari already supports this.

No, you don't use full songs when you buy ringtones from iTunes. It has you select a sample of the music at a specific range of time within the song, and it converts that into a ring tone.

that does seem strange that you are limited to 30 seconds.. anyone know the reason why?

I can't believe someone else bought something without doing any research and then has the temerity to moan!!!
Then doesn't even do any finding out before moaning even more!!!

You can use your own music as ringtones. Guide here:
http://cybernetnews.com/cybernotes-c...es-in-windows/

“I've found that I cant appear to buy ringtones on Itunes,”

There is a Ringtones section on the iTunes music store

In what way? Its a simple QWERTY keyboard that only intervenes when you appear to have made a mistake. If the correction comes up and it's not correct, simply tap the correction and it won't come up again. Once the phone has built up a dictionary of your words, it will ask less and less.

79p for iTunes DRM
99p for M4A non-DRM

Its still cheaper than the three quid in HMV!

Give it time and you'll see. By the way, if you don't like change, I wouldn't go for a Mac!

How long is it until your Voicemail kicks in? Its around 25 seconds normally. Theres no point in having ringtones over 30 seconds....

It uses its own app. I think it connects to the HTML5 version of youtube, (i.e MP4 files)

You should buy one straightaway, I use my just to listen to 30second ringtones - i have a odd fetish for monophonic crazy frog tunes.

Who cares about ringtones? if it makes some sort of sound, maybe vibration when someone calls who cares what it is?

2 out of 10 for a rant as by spending 5 minutes on Google you would have solved your ring-tone dilemma without having to buy anything and found out how to turn auto correction off.

I do appreciate it, those who have made suggestions...

However, I can't believe the arrogance of those who have said you've not researched the Iphone before getting one... it never, ever occurred to me that you wouldn't be able to do the things on it that you can do with every other phone on the market !

In fact, because the Iphone is so popular, I'd have thought you could do more with it ! The only thing it appear to do that other phones don't is operate Applications - most of which, in any case, appear to have pretty poor write-ups on Itunes...
