Quick question - I'm due for a new broadband deal and was wondering if I leave bt would I be able to use the vision box as purely a freeview box?

BT Vision Box minus BT Broadband equals BT Doorstop.

It does however include a very sellable (on a well known auction site) 160GB hard disk inside it.

So its not completely useless.

Why don't you just say Ebay ?

And to the OP :- dont even think about selling the entire box on Ebay as a working BTVision box

Because I didn't want to.

Well, BT are going to say that, aren't they - after all if you have BT Broadband and want BT Vision without a monthly sub, they will set-up a Vision account for you and sell you the Vision box for £90, and tie you to a min. 12 month term.

Vision box only orders: £90 one-off Vision+ box available to new BT Vision customers only, including new or existing BT Total Broadband customers re-contracting for 12 months, provided you don't cease your BT Vision service within 12 months; otherwise charges up to £199 apply. Conditions apply.
But, as long as you are a BT Broadband customer, you could buy one on 'a well known auction site' for a nominal cost (they don't sell for much), then ring BT and tell them a relative gave you the box and you just want a Vision account setting up, and voila - saved the best part of £90 for the same deal, and no min. term as BT didn't subsidise the cost of the box for you.

Got a bt vision box of my friend. Read the stuff on the internet so had little hope - messed with it for a while without luck, went to get a cup of tea came back and channels were on......plugged into my talk talk box and iplayer etc all worked, as did recorded tv.
Unplugged it to move the box and lost it all.
Had an idea went back to friends house plugged it into his home hub and powered up left it until all lights had stopped flashing. Came home and it works again, iplayer the lot.....
Deleted all viewing card activations from recorded tv schedule to be on the safe-side 5 days in and still all functions working......

When it is unable to connect to the BT servers it will eventually die.

Once the epg runs out after approximately two weeks you'll not be able to record or find out whats on. Good luck!

Just buy something like
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5-SATA-U...ht_2272wt_1300 for less than a tenner and put the hard drive in, its handy for backup or to use with a laptop (no connection to the seller).
