I've been a massive fan of laura marling since Alas I Cannot Swim was released, and even more so since I realised she was only 18 when it came out! I'm really looking forward to the new album I Speak Because I Can (March 1st), and was wondering what people are expecting from the album, and what everyone thinks of the new single Devil Spoke. I saw a video for it on the times website i think (?!) and they described it as a new sound for her. As far as I can see she's just building on her sound, rather than changing it.

It struck me as a complete change to identikit Celtic pop, a far cry from her excellent first lp. A shame if the whole new album is like the single.

I haven't heard anything from the new album, if i'm being honest I'm a bit scared to because I love 'Alas I Cannot Swim' so much I don't want to be disappointed if her second album doesn't strike me in the same way

Yeah, I think the new song is only OK but there will probably be better songs on the album. She's a big talent for sure but still so young. She'd have written the first album when 16/17 and the new album when 18/19 so I don't expect too much yet.

I see what you mean about the celtic pop thing, but there's something about her voice that's so distinctive that it still stands out. I don't love it though, and i am hoping that the rest of the album bears more resembalance to the first album. I loved songs like My Manic and I and Your Only Doll on the first album, and would like to hear more songs in this vain.

I bought Alas I Cannot Swim on recommendations. I listened to it on the way somewhere and wanted to top myself it was so depressing. Gave it to a mate who said the same. Gave it to another who loved it so at least it found a good home!!

Great singer and writer, depressing material, sorry

Sometimes the best work comes from writing about what you know. Her experience is similar to mine, so I find her debut particularly poignant.

The album is doing well in mid weeks which is suprising giving her last album didn't really break out into success.

This is ****ing talent, I am overjoyed to have finally got my grubby mits on this album. One of the few albums so far from 2010 that has some substance!

I loved Alas, I Cannot Swim but not so much with this album.
I adore Devil's Spoke but apart from that, there's only one other song that caught my ear, Hope In The Air.
