I have a Nokia 5800 at the min, I last topped up in £10 in October, so shows how much I use the phone side of things, I was either going to get an iPhone or iPod touch, I am thinking an iPod touch would be better as I dont really make calls etc, but can it do all the iPhone can bar make calls/messages etc? And also do these things have radios as I use mine on my 5800 quite a bit.

iphone also can access to Internet over the 3G network, iTouch only has wireless, but 3G will cost you. I don't think either has an FM radio, they added it to ipod nano, but not to touch, IIRC.

Well there is no 3g coverage over here in N.I anyway so thats no issue, radio is though

there is a radio app called tunein radio which is very good. It streams radio over the network and works on edge as well as 3g. not sure if it works over the 2g network or not though, but obviously if you wanted that you would need to go down the iphone route.

You are in the same predicment I am in

I was thinking of getting an Ipod Touch as I don;t use the phone alot

You can use twitter etc but only if you are in a wifi area so not so good for on the move.
The I-phone can do this on the move where there is a 3g or 2g signal.

I have 3 options really. Get the chepest contract but pay a bit for the phone

Get a PAYG phone then pay £10 per month for the wifi

Just get an I-pod touch and have no Internet on the move in on wifi areas

Or finally get an Ipad but they will be very expensive and not the sort of thing you can fit in your pocket.

The phone bit (and its 3G connectivity) is basically the only difference between the touch and the iphone. The touch can do everything else the iphone can. As long as you can connect to a wireless network, you have full net access with the touch.

Do you want to use the applications and internet? If not there's ipod nano, the latest has an FM radio and the camera, too, I think. Zune HD has an FM radio, wifi and Internet browser. Safari is much better though, although FW upgrade is expected in the near future. Audio playback is miles ahead of iTouch. There's only a handful of apps for Zune.

Yes, I want the net and applications, thats all I use on my Nokia 5800

So if you don't mind a lack of Internet when no wifi and no fm radio, iTouch should be ok, I think.

What's the cheapest iPhone contract? £30 a month?

You could go the tesco route £320 upfront for a 16gb 3GS then £20 a month for 12 months. It gives you internet access plus £60 worth of text and calls per month.Tesco use the 02 network and they will unlock the iphone for you at the end of the 12 months.

Am I reading this correctly. $4.99 just to update your iPod/iPhone to latest software? God they have a cheek charging for updates.

That's for major upgrades, minor ones are for free. So going from 2.0 to 3.0 will cost you, but 3.0 to 3.1 is gratis. iPhone owners have all upgrades for free, because they hit them up for much more money already anyway.

If you have no 3G in your area and rarely use a phone, then there is very little point in getting an iPhone. The iPod Touch does what the iPhone does, except that it has no camera or 3G connectivity. I have an iPod touch but will be looking into getting an iPhone, simple because I want the 3G connectivity.

When is the iPhone 4g expected?

Well to be fair they only charge that for the full version upgrades (i.e. iPhone OS 2 & OS 3) and they tend to add a lot of functionality. The bug fix and minor feature upgrades are free. They only charge for the iPod touch - you get them for free with the iPhone.

If you use the phone and texting very little then you might consider getting the iPhone on O2 PAYG (£449, but can get ~£15 cashback if you get it from apple.com/uk and go via topcashback.co.uk) and then using it on giffgaff (newly launched virtual network that also runs on O2). You won't need your iPhone unlocked as giffgaff SIMs are identified as O2 SIMs by the iPhone, and giffgaff offer free data till the end of May (and call / text prices are low too at 8p / 4p respectively).

Well it probably won't be called the iPhone 4G (as 4th generation mobile networks won't be around for a while!), but it is widely anticipated that a new iPhone model will be announced / released around June/July.

well many who use iphones rarely speak on em, its more about the apps and internet.

so it depends how often you are near wifi if you want to settle for a touch.

somethings like gps require iphone

Currently the iTouch (3rd gen) is available with up to 64GB whilst the iPhone (3GS) is available with up to 32GB.

The capacity of both ranges tends to double with each new version so I would expect a 64GB iPhone in June or July 2010, and possibly a 128GB iTouch in November or so.

New generation smartphones have double the screen resolution of the Iphone.
This gives a true web experience.
