Very true, which is something that everyone is forgetting.

Fortec rarely uses the phone, uses the radio a fair bit (internet radio does not count), and to be honest other than the urge to buy a new gadget, I see absolutely no need for Fortec to buy an iPod Touch, let alone an iPhone.

I'm going to look incredibly stupid here, so prepare yourselves.

I'm planning on getting an iPod touch, purely as I'd want the iPhone on pay as you go, were I to get it at all, and I have a perfectly decent phone as it is. Anyway, with this whole wifi thing ... does it mean that if I'm in the car or something (not driving obvs) or on the bus it won't work? I can currently access the internet on my phone (LG Cookie) when I'm in these situations. Also, would it be likely to connect to a wifi network that wasn't your own? Sometimes my neighbours wireless network connections show up on my list (but obviously I don't use them) but don;t know if the touch would just link to whatever it could if you get me. Also are apps free?

Hope this all makes sense!

ITouch means: no wifi = no Internet. You can try to connect to any wifi network. Some of them are protected with WEP/WPA/WPA2 security and you have to know the passphrase to connect to them. Some are unprotected, you can connect to those, although it's not very nice of you to do that, unless it's a public network. You should not be surprised if they eventually find out and kick you out. Also as mentioned already, no iphone also means no GPS, in case you would want that.

I'm not techie enough to answer your question, but I do know that O2 and Tesco are now doing pay-as-you-go deals for iPhone.

Yes you see thats what it is the urge to buy a new gadget My 5800 does me fine I suppose, although apps are seriously lacking on symbian.

Some apps are free, but some of those are demo versions of full apps and they will keep asking you to upgrade. The problem is you pay apple to publish your app in the shop, so it's not like other platforms where something is a true freeware, it will cost you as a developer more than your free time and unless you do it as a charity you'll have to get the money back. I installed a few ~5 free apps and was using only one before I stopped using iTouch completely.

The short answer is - no, it won't work.

When you're not at home, there will be very few places (depending on where you live) where you will be able to use the internet for free on the Touch.

Even with extremely high resolutions, arguably a true web experience is still not possible unless the screen is large enough to avoid the constant need to zoom in and out.

iPhone vs iPod touch... if 3G mobile-phone network internet access is the most important thing between them, then you would probably be better off with an iPod touch and a MiFi from Three as they have considerably greater 3G network coverage meaning you're more likely to get a decent connection more of the time. It'll work out quite a bit cheaper too, and the 3rd gen iTouch models (32GB and 64GB versions) include the earphones with a mic that allow you to make voice calls with VoIP software like Skype.

As for apps, a lot of free apps are either limited versions of premium apps, or include an advertising banner, or both. But there are an awful lot of free apps which are very good, unrestricted, and have no advertising taking up screen space. You just have to do a little looking around.

The all in one iPhone is no doubt more convenient, but the iTouch is still worth considering as the MiFi's wifi can be used by several devices if you give them the password, and being a device designed from the outset to make a WiFi hotspot from a 3G signal, it does a better job of it than installing software on a smartphone to do the same purpose.
