Crow baiting a Cat

This thread is not really about pets, so apologies., but I just wondered if anyone else has seen anything like this.

For about 20mins yesterday afternoon I watched a very large crow teasing a cat. The cat was in his ready to pounce position, and the crow was hopping sideways closer and closer to him, then would hop away again. He repeated this over and over getting closer to the cat each time.
The cat eventually made a pounce at the crow who flew up and then came down again beside the cat and continued to hop about in front of him.

This went on for ages until eventually the cat gave up and very slowly walked away. The crow watched and then nonchalantly waddled off in the opposite direction.

I was hilarious to watch.

I've seen a magpie pull a fox's brush. The fox ran off a little way and the magpie followed. The magpie then pulled the brush and the fox went for another little jog.

This went on for about five minutes.

The cat we had when I was child would try and stalk birds but he was so slow they didn't bother flying away, they just walked off or hopped to one side.

Those birds weren't as brave as this cat.

Oh how funny is that.

I often wonder when watching birds, why they do things like this.......and I think they are simply having fun.

crows and magpies are extremely clever birds so this crow was just having himself a bit of fun. Maybe it was pay back for summit lol. I have a crow who burries food stuff for later on. Very under rated feathered friends.

My first cat Louie decided to stalk a magpie once and he got his deserts, because the magpie's mates, bombarded Louie in retaliation. They didn't peck at him, just kept flying around him, and putting him in a proper spin.

The OP reminds me of an incident quite a few years ago. We were living in a flat, and spotted our cat on the flat roof of the garages doing that sideways on dance at a crow, the one that they do to make themselves look bigger and threaten other cats.

The crow watched her for a minute, then obviously thought, "Ooh, I can do that as well", and sort of rose up to its full height and spread its wings to their full span.

Our cat fled.

Take a look at the problem solving abilities of this crow. Notice how it fashioned a tool to solve a problem. Hardly "bird brained".

Crows absolutely fascinate me as well ~ very intelligent birds. I feed the crows in our local park ~ it started with the odd gravy bone but I now save any fatty bits of meat or cheese etc. The crows recognise my car & as soon as I drive into the car park they land beside the car. When I let the dogs out the crows fly up only to land a few feet behind the dogs. They then follow me round the park whilst I chuck food for them, trying very hard not to let the dogs see what I'm doing!

I don't know much about crow behaviour but there seems to be 2 "gangs" of crows, one on each side of the park. When I walk across the middle of the park, there are often very noisy fights & mobbings between the 2 gangs. So now I try to feed first on one side of the park, then the other to try to prevent these territorial disputes.

As well as fashoining tools to problem solve, there is footage of crows in Japan using man-made technology to crack nuts. The crows wait at a pedestrian crossing & when the lights turn red, they walk into the middle of the road, place a nut on the crossing then fly up & wait for the lights to change. The cars drive over the nuts cracking the shells & when the lights turn red again, the crows fly down to retrieve the pieces of nut ~ clever birds.

Sounds like great fun

People so very often underestimate the intelligence of Birds, I love to watch them, they fascinate me.

Thanks
