Touchscreen not 'touching'
alanwarwic
01-02-2010
My device touchscreen has stopped working.
Initially it went crazy with it touching maybe about an inch from its mark.

Then it stopped completely after a firmware reload so now cannot even get pas the screen calibration.

Any experiences that will help?

Perhaps if you gave some more info people could help?

Like exactly what device you have?

Not all that relevant Martin in that it certainly helps to widen my device range for this problem.

It is a Fujitsu N100 but touchscreens are no doubt technicaly same on most devices.
Am looking to see if anyone with ingenuity has fixed a similar problem.

It's a bit silly to say that it's not relevant what device you have. With the plethora of touchscreen devices out now, from monitors to tablets to the ipod Touch and the Zen X-Fi, it most certainly is important, as one will surely not operate the same, or within the same parameters or returning the same problems, as the others?

Would be a bit silly to ignore anyone relevant comments considering no one seems to have had any similar issue that they would like to share.

From what you say, it sounds like a hardware problem (I assume the touch-screen) was working normally before.

If the touch-screen has developed a fault, it will almost certainly not be fixable. Also, there are at least two totally different designs of touch-screen displays in use which work completely differently (resistive and capacitive) so it is wrong to assume they are all alike.

Princegaz is right, it is most likely the screen that is at fault.

You say you can't get past the calibration screen - does the device show this as a default after reloading the firmware? I ask because my Palm did that after a hard reset - it would prompt for the screen to be recalibrated before anything else.

You're options are limited - if you feel up to it you could try taking the thing apart and checking the screen connection, usually a little ribbon cable that attaches to the main PCB by means of tiny sprung contacts in a plastic enclosure. If that's worked it's way loose it may just require re-seating to get things working again.

If you can track down a faulty unit of the same type (on ebay), you might be able to swap the screen modules or you might just find a cheap replacement altogether if you're really attached to it.

Or you might have to buy a new unit - which just about sums up modern consumer electronics

I reloaded the firmware because it had 'shifted' and this seemed to fix it.
Then it stopped shortly after so is a hint of something loose or more likely a bad contact.

There are no buttons on the devices so is hard to bypass.
Looks like I will have to force it open and hope.
