I've been receiving sbusive text messages. Police advised me to block that number but Vodafone say it's not possible. They suggested I changed my number but as it's a business number and on all my publicity I am really not keen to do that yet.

Anyone got any suggestions?

If its an iphone and its jailbroken you can get iblacklist which is free to block 1 number, the paid version blocks more.

You could send a "pretend" automated response. Something like:

"This is an automated message from Vodafone's message-forwarding centre. The text you sent to XXXXXXXXXX on date/time has been rejected. Reason (#17): Your number is black listed."

That's a good idea. I have been avoiding making any response but that might work.

OK o it's a symbian phone - you can get programmes to block numbers and texts. If you open a bank account with Barlcays they gives kaspersky for mobiles free of charge, you can block numbers with that.

Be careful about following advice like the stuff posted there - it says you can ask your network to block number and they simply don't do that.

I know.

And yesterday Vodafone told me to call them as soon as I received another message and they would log it and keep file for police but today when I did that they said that they can't view anything except messages from Vodafone!

This is a telecommunications company.

If I were you I would be looking to resolve the main problem which is that someone either has the wrong number or that someone has it in for you. If its the latter then I would be wanting to sort that out with whoever is sending the messages. Blocking the sending number or changing your phone number wont make the problem go away and could only move it. If someone verbally absued you in the street every day Im sure you would want to know why and resolve it, you wouldnt just run or take a different route.

If it's the same number all the time get hold of a speaker phone, ask a friend to ring the number (prefix it with 141 to with hold the number you are calling from). Try and get friend to have a conversation and see if you recognise the other voice. Make sure speaker phone is on though. If you recognise the voice tell the police.

I know. I get it. I said this to the police. It is my son's ex partner who tries to get at him bygetting at me. She has changed her number and probably will do again. Problem is, and this is my problem, that she will take it out on him via not letting him see his baby whatever I do. Blocking just seemed to be the easiest route for now.

Hi NorfolkPuppy,

I'm so sorry to hear that you are receiving abusive texts. This is never a nice situation and I understand how frustrating it can be when you can't just block the contact entirely.

You mention that you called to log the abusive SMS, although we are unable to see the content of the SMS we can log when your handset received it and where it came from. I would also suggest that you save these messages, incase you need to produce any evidence to the police.

I really hope that this person stops sending abusive texts and if you do decide to change your mobile number, feel free to contact me and I will help to arrange this for you.

All the best,

Espi

Call up the CS dept of the Network that the text sender is on and have a go at them, asking them to send a warning text to their customer who is abusing the telecommunications network.

If that doesn't help, or they don't/won't do it, you could try deleting the texts without reading them.

Do you know the other person? If not, just plaster their number everywhere you go around the web - let them deal with a load of spam texts.

Or PM me the number and i'll do it for you.

I don't think two wrongs make a right!!! I had a similar problem last year. I just deleted all texts without reading them from that number. They got fed up in the end...It's only good for them if they get a response of any kind. The providers and Police are usually useless in these cases.

On Orange there is a malicious calls department but not every cs rep knows about it. You can forward abusive texts to 7726 (spam) for them to deal with, I'd be surprised if Vodafone didn't have a similar policy. Might be worth asking. I had a problem with internet generated spam text messages for porn for a while, I managed to contact this department and had to give permission for them to read my incoming messages, The problem texts stopped soon after.

They won't do that. It might raise a silent chuckle in the agent but they won't send anything to one of their customers on your say-so.

I have to say that is terrible, terrible advice. You can't phone any company and get them to tell off one of their customers. Neither should you take matters into your own hands and dish out retribution.

Well, their customer is breaking the terms of service by sending threatening or abusive texts. Are you saying they'd do absolutely nothing?

I got a load of porn spam from a Vodafone number so I called Voda and moaned, they said they'd send a text to the number to remind them of the obligation - and the texts stopped.
I gave them ny number so presumably they checked that there had been communication beforehand.

If the hosting network doesn't want to do anything about it, what's a person to do exactly?

In this country we don't have mob justice, we report things to the correct people and let them deal with it.
This spam, you were receiving, how did you know it was coming from a Vodafone number?

Unless the police had been involved at that stage whoever sent that text to them would have been in serious preach of Vodafone's policies. To be honest I seriously doubt this happened the way you describe.

I agree that Appleseed has seriously misunderstood the situation. There are also other questions in his post. Why would someone be sending porn spam from an ordinary mobile number? That would be hugely expensive. How did he know the number was a Vodafone number? Why didn't he report the messages to phonepayplus or his own network's nuisance calls bureau?
As always, the advice is to report abusive messages to your service provider and to the police.

Doubt away mate. I reported it, they told me that's what they planned to do. Texts stopped.
