Thanks to everyone who voted in Round Ten

First up this time around, with votes from 27.59% of you is Gridlock. In last year's Survivor it came 35th and it now becomes the highest ranked episode from last year to be evicted so far. There are 3 episodes which ranked lower last year which are still in the game now.

And it's well done to Muttley76, Tumpy, syramu, Shinyteapot & Verence who all correctly said that Boom Town would be out before The Runaway Bride. It was in 48th place last year and claims 41st this year which is an improvement. 24.14% of you voted for it this time around.

To recap: (last years's placings in brackets{})

{38} 43) The End Of The World
{39} 44) 42
{NE} 45=) The Next Doctor
{45=} 45=) New Earth
{41} 47) Rise Of The Cybermen
{42=} 48) Age Of Steel
{40} 49) Voyage Of The Damned
{52} 50) World War III

{42=} 51) The Doctor's Daughter
{53} 52) Aliens Of London
{51} 53) Daleks In Manhattan
{50} 54) Evolution Of The Daleks
{NE} 55=) Planet of The Dead
{47} 55=) The Long Game
{45=} 57) The Lazarus Experiment
{54=} 58) Love And Monsters
{54=} 59=) Fear Her
{49} 59=) The Idiot's Lantern

Well done to:-

+ DavidG_UK

and

+ Gogfumble

who were the only people to nominate both of the evicted episodes.

As with the last round, all you need to do is cast your eye over the episodes listed below then post your three least favourites ones on this thread or send them to me on PM. The two with the most votes will be evicted at the end of the round.

You can, if you wish, also put your votes on "auto". This means that any episodes you've voted for that haven't been evicted are carried forward into the next round. It is, however, your responsibility to check whether you need to add any episodes to make sure you've voted for the required number of episodes.

Round Eleven Question:

Do you have a preference for settings?

Do you prefer a claustrophobic, isolated setting where perhaps the characters are being bumped off one buy one? Something along the lines of 42, Silence In The Library, The End Of The World, Midnight etc?

Or do you prefer a story where the characters have freedom of movement?

Or, don't you care one way or another? You just like a good, well told story and the setting is unimportant?

So, it's on with the game then. Time to pick your three least favourite episodes from:-

Season One

01) Rose
02) The Unquiet Dead
03) Dalek
04) Father's Day
05) The Empty Child
06) The Doctor Dances
07) Bad Wolf
08) The Parting Of The Ways

Season Two

09) Tooth & Claw
10) School Reunion
11) The Girl In The Fireplace
12) The Impossible Planet
13) The Satan Pit
14) Army Of Ghosts
15) Doomsday

Season Three

17) The Shakespeare Code
18) Human Nature
19) The Family Of Blood
20) Blink
21) Utopia
22) The Sound Of Drums
23) Last Of The Timelords

Season Four

24) Partners In Crime
25) The Fires Of Pompeii
26) Planet Of The Ood
27) The Sontaran Stratagem
28) The Poison Sky
29) The Unicorn & The Wasp
30) Silence In The Library
31) Forest Of The Dead
32) Midnight
33) Turn Left
34) The Stolen Earth
35) Journey's End

Awww, sad to see those episode go, especially Gridlock, which for me is a real gem of an episode. Boom Town has some lovely character moments too, even if the story is rather uninspired.

Anyway, AUTO for me this round, please RK!

Interesting question, but my rather fence sitting answer is it all depends on the story and the execution of the script.

Old:
Runaway Bride
The Unquiet Dead

New:
Last Of The Timelords - it's got some great moments but they're far outweighed by the bad for me, especially that ending. And I don't think anyone will risk a CGI version of the Doctor again in a hurry...

As for the question:
I quite like the claustrophobia stories. I think in some ways it forces more creative writing and characters. Well, sometimes anyway! Midnight works brilliantly because of it for me - literally almost a "single room" story. And who'd have thought a whole story could take place in a lighthouse? Yet Horror at Fang Rock is one of my favourites.

quality of the story more important than setting but have enjoyed the stories you mentioned.

02) The Unquiet Dead

I like Gridlock, but I think I talked about my dorkiness regarding that episode the last time we had the New Who episodes Survivor, so I won't repeat myself. Boom Town is interesting because I liked the group dynamic on the episode and as someone mentioned in the last thread, it's the best Slitheen episode in all the series (in at least my opinion and that of the person who said it!). The dinner scene was fun. Mickey was a sulky jerk (although considering how Rose treated him, maybe it's a bit understandable) and I liked him least in this episode.

I think a well told story is more important than the setting, but if the story breaks the norm or takes risks and falls a bit short plotwise, it can still be very enjoyable.

Auto for me please Rita.

I like a variety of stories but I do love Midnight.

Old Votes:
Father's Day

New Votes:
School Reunion
The Unquiet Dead

This is getting hard now. This is the first round I have really had to think about who I should nominate and am feeling quite bad that I have to vote for someone as I like all the episodes now, it isn't just a case of getting rid of the ones I don't particularly like/care for.

Gridlock had cat people.

The cat people are gone. That can only be a good thing.

Well I know you may find this shocking...but some people like it...I know someone having a different opinion...what a strange world

Auto for me RK!

Really sorry to see Gridlock and Boom Town to go....they are my top ten stories. But not suprised they are gone, not many like them.

As for the question. I think whether the environment is clausterphobic or open space, depends on what type of story the writer wants to tell. For example, Midnight works as a clausterphobic story, because its about putting the Doctor in a position where he can't do his usual "run" away from the danger moment, and therefore, the story is able to explore the Doctor being at his most vunarable, and how it turns the humans into the real monsters. And sometimes some stories need the open space, like Turn Left...which was about showing Donna's life again, but when she hadn't met the Doctor....so it should be about the story and the characters, rather than about the environment first.

I, for one, am happy to vote for

•Last of the Timelords

yet again. That's just not an episode I can even bear to re-watch. Boomtown and Gridlock, OTOH, I like quite a lot. "Dinner and bondage. Works for me." Makes me laugh every time. And there's only a slight catperson presence in Gridlock. Quite liked the "Abide With Me" moment.

My other votes remain:

• Midnight (sorry but I REALLY hated it)
• The End of Time (part 1)

I like a variety of settings. It's the story that matters.

RK, I have a suggested question for a future round, if anyone would be interested. Maybe you could word it better: How much does your attitude toward the villains and/or companions in an episode affect your overall opinion of the episode? Is anything with the Slitheen/cat people/pig people/Adam automatically bad?
Verence
04-02-2010
09) Tooth & Claw

11) The Girl In The Fireplace

25) The Fires Of Pompeii

On the question of "base under siege" vs "open plan" episodes it really depends on the story

I thought I'd already voted, but looking above it seems not. I can accept that Last Of The Timelords is pretty bad ("I can save the world, but only if you all really, really believe it!"), but it's much better than:

The Christmas Invasion
Journey's End
The End Of Time (episode 1)
