Nokia N97 Firmware 2.1
ccursons

I have been running this new firmware for two days on my phone now and all I can say is
WOW
this is how the phone should have operated all along, my contract is almost due for renewal but if the phone keeps going the way it is I will keep it and not upgrade.

Its fast, can multi task without a problem and has not crashed once. I havent heard the nokia ringtone cut in, it automatically updating the home screen widgets like facebook and accu weather without a hitch, doesnt crash when someone calls its amazing.

I do have to say though Im a bit gutted that I am so excited just because my phone is doing exactly what it shoudl have all along.

my mom's 3310 also doesn't crash when making or receiving calls.

i cannot get the updater to work on my windows 7 PC.
It keeps saying Device Recovery but at least I have not messed up the phone.

i'm with vodafone - do i have to wait for them to approve that new version before i can update? how long do they usually take with these kind of things?

yes you do.

it's difficult to give any firm predictions, i've been trying to gather data on this... to ball park you a figure i'd say a month. but there is a wide margin of error on that.

They still haven't approved the update (3 months or so after it was released). I upgraded to firmware v11 yesterday by debranding my phone (very easy to do - more on that later).

I wasn't experiencing that many problems with the v10 firmware, just a few annoyances such as the fact the some apps wouldn't auto-update or find an internet connection even though one was present). It only rebooted once in the 2 months I'd had it. No problems with ringtones or freezing or anything, but I didn't like the idea that there was a bug-fixing and optimisation software update out there and Vodafone weren't letting me have it.

Anyway, the process of debranding is free and takes about 30 seconds, if that. Useful instructions found here (http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm). Loading the update takes between 5 and 20 minutes depending on your internet connection. Since updating, all my apps find and use the internet connection perfectly, I'm not stuck with Vodafone's useless bundled apps, phone performance is a bit faster I think and all apps are working perfectly unlike before (Accuweather and YouTube in particular). Apparently it invalidates your warranty or something, but you can take it to a Nokia repair centre if anything goes wrong with it anyway.

Anyway, to sum up, I'd recommend it. The phone is much easier to use now and everything just 'works'.

I've just done this on my N97 mini to get away from Vodafone branding. I've now got about 12mb less ram than I had before. Any ideas why?

Accuweather wont work now either. It comes back with script errors when you try and connect. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling but it still wont work.

Can't see any differences in the firmware itself.

My N97 has miraclously updated to v 21.0.045.213.03 via the device updater on the phone.
Having not had ANY updates since I got the phone, I was pretty shocked :O)

Edit: Vodafone branded.
