iTunes Help :-(

Hi
I've been having some computer trouble today, I kept getting messages from my antivirus telling me I had critical problems.
After I told it to 'fix everything' I had to reboot my computer.

I've just put it back on and my entire iTunes library has been wiped. 2015 songs.
Now, I know I should back up and everything, I'm regretting not doing it now.

My question is: the songs are still on my iPod. What will happen if I plug it in? Will that wipe too, or will my music be ok?

Any help is greatly appreciated

This happened to me as well today. Although my itunes and all my songs are still on my computer at work, my Ipod appears to have packed up completely. My Ipod doesn't appear to recognise when I put in the lead into the USB slot.

Sorry Laura, no ideas of help to help you. Here's hoping that someone can come up with suggestions for both of us.

I think as long as you don't try to sync your ipod with the itunes library it shouldn't wipe your songs on your ipod.So it should be alright to plug it in.

Go and get Sharepod

http://www.getsharepod.com/download/

Fire that up and connect your ipod. You'll be able to easily download all the music from your Ipod to your PC quite safely.

Then, once that's all backed up, you can then re-sync your ipod with itunes if that's your preferred application

Before you go on, it's worth checking to see if your music is still hanging about on your harddrive - I find it hard to believe the a 'cleanup' of your PC will target the iTunes music folder. More likely iTunes has just 'lost' the location of the music.

First, check that your music is still there.

Open Windows Exporer (Windows-E), then navigate to My Documents>My Music>iTunes>iTunes Media>Music

If you see a load of folders with artist names, then it means your music is still in-tact on your system.

If this is the case, start iTunes, then choose Edit>Preferences. Cick the Advanced tab, then uncheck the bit that says 'Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library'. Click OK.

Next, make it so you can see both your iTunes window and the Explorer window side by side. Click and drag the 'iTunes Media' folder onto the iTunes window.

After a while, iTunes should (hopefully) list the music as stored in the folders.

Go back into Preferences>Advanced then put a check mark against 'Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library'. Click OK and you're done.

Good luck!

What ipod do you have? If it's not itouch you can copy the files from the ipod to your HDD. But first start itunes without ipod connected, go to Edit->Preferences->Devices and set there Prevent ipods and iphones from syncing automatically. It should ask you anyway if you want to sync/remove everything from the ipod. Connect the ipod and on the summary tab there will be a checkbox to make the ipod's disc available to OS. You will see the ipod as another drive. Copy everything from it to your HDD, make sure hidden files/directories are copied as well. Now you can drag and drop those files into itunes. You should see your files again. Artworks could be missing, that's something you might have to redo again. When you sync the ipod now, it removes everything and loads it again with the same files.
