Always thought they were way better than just about any band at the time, the main creative force behind them was Mark Shaw who seemed to be really into what he was doing, a great talent, I think bands like them and The Alarm and Big Country could of done more and did not fulfill their potential. And Sugarbox is one of the most beautiful, emotional songs I have ever heard....amazing

Thanks so much for mentioning these guys - they are still one of my favourite bands to this day. Shaw has an awesome voice, shame he is such a prat!

They are still going in a new lineup minus Shaw - just like fish without chips, totally pointless. Shaw WAS Jerico.

Great days.

Could you tell me what the hell happened to this band? I can't seem to find the whole story as to what caused their downfall....who is the singer in the reformed Then Jerico then?

To be honest I don't really know all the ins and outs of it. I think that a couple of the original members are still in the current line up, not sure which ones. There was a TJ website running up until about a year or so ago ran by a lovely girl called Jo - Mark got all shirty and made her take it down, threatened her with legal action etc. Apparently he is very arsy these days but I don't really know why.

The last album I had with him as the singer was Orgasmaphobia - don't think he was working with his original lineup then either. I also believe that he wanted to keep the name Then Jerico.

Blimey, what a wrangle.

So anyroad, a few years ago he did himself no favours by appearing on Reborn in the USA and quitting before the live shows (won eventually by Spandau's Tony Hadley if memory serves me correctly) - whether or not he was edited in a bad light remains to be seen but alas, he came across as a complete arse.

So I've probably left you no wiser - that's all I know to be honest other than the fact that he was badly beaten up last year by some thugs on his way back from a shop. Can't find a link to that story. He also played the MCN bike do at Butlins in Skeg a few years ago and I was annoyed to have missed him but watching it back on youtube (The Motive - I'm sure it's still on there) he appeared to have lost his old magic.

He's a darned good singer though. He also made a lovely solo album called Almost of which I am a proud owner.

Hope these snippets have helped. x

What style were Orgasmaphobia and Always in? I was also told that the record company dropped the band as they made no money - yet I thought their album sales were very healthy?

Orgasmaphobia is brilliant - not like their older stuff but the voice is still unmistakeable and some of the tracks are amazing (Breakdown in Paradise and All in all especially). You should be able to find it on ebay, it's well worth a listen.

Almost is very rare, hard to find but that is more downbeat and totally different. Two great tracks to look out for on it though are Mrs Wonderful and Tidal wave.

There is a clip of Shaw with Andy Taylor on The James Whale show from the early 90's and his voice sounds better live than on record. However the clip from him at Pontins from 2 years ago is sad...also there is some other clips of him falling all over the stage, I don't find it funny just so sad. One last question, is Orgasmaphobia still melodic? Is it rocker than Then Jerico? And would you say it has any tracks on it as catchy as the old stuff?

Yes, it is melodic. It's a bit more over produced than old school TJ but still quite rocky in places. I actually think it is a brilliant album.

All in All is instantly catchy as is Breakdown in Paradise. Another good track to listen out for is Walking on Glass.

I do keep hearing that Shaw is a prat, but what exactly has he done to get this reputation?

Did you see the first ep of reborn in the usa? Well, it didn't help his cause, I can tell you. It's rumoured that he's gotten a bit bitter and twisted in his old age though to be honest and fair I can't really blame him - his voice knocks the spots of most male artists doing well today and his music is far better than most of the bilge out there today, too.

Like I said earlier, the 'reborn' gig could have been edited to make him look bad - every panto needs it's villian after all and back then the reality tv thing hadn't really taken off like it has now and we are all far wiser as to how it really works!

Prat or not, I would really like to hear more from Mark. It would be lovely if he ever stumbled across this thread and had his say!

Right, I think I am going to do the ironing but can't make up my mind between Big Area and First for the background music. Decisions, decisions....

I remember reading in an interview that he said The Reborn thing set him up to look like a bad guy so taht is why he walked out after a day.....as yiu said, it was edited to make him look like a bad guy IMO. Still,Mark has written one of the best ballads EVER in "Sugarbox" - incredible. song.

A talent and a voice like his should not be lost in the wilderness that's for sure.

they never appealed to me tbh... imho they were just another bland 80's band.

prefered squeeze, talk talk, adventures, johnny hates jazz and even aztec camera... hey ho, each to their own i guess

Well Big Area won the battle of the ironing music yesterday and I have to say that both Sugar Box and Darkest Hour are, quite possibly, two of the most stunning ballads I have had the good fortune to listen to. I'd forgotten how good they were.

Agree totally - seems he's still around and using the name Then Jerico! After a googling session on him last night I was quite surprised by this - he has an upcoming gig in London later this month. Now, does that mean he is back with the rest of the guys (they were under that name without him awhile back) or has he carried on by himself using the name? I am completely confused now!

I was a massive fan of Then Jerico back in the late 80s. Saw them live in Dec '87 and Mar '89 and both shows were fantastic. I even met Mark Shaw doing a signing in Edinburgh's Top Shop for Comic Relief in '89 - he was very nice that day and posed for photos with fans and chatted away to all of us. No sign of the wankerisms that were to follow!

It is isnt it? Can't believe all the bad luck he has had. Love Bear, I have managed to d/load 95% of Orgasmaphobia and can you honestly, honestly say that the somgs on that are as good as his best early Then Jerico work? Not even close, sorry....not sayoing he shouldn't update his sound but its just not what I think he should be doing....its not bad (apart from the title track which is garbage) but......well to be honest, hes lost that magic...what do you think to his recent live appearances on you tube??

To be honest Trickster Orgasmaphobia isn't as good but I guess the same could be said for a lot of bands - although I still adore the Manics and James's voice in particular I would be lying if I said I thought the later stuff was better. That said, I do still love Orgasmaphobia, I think Mark's voice sounds good on it and I will track down a copy of Rictus Smile should it ever surface!

I haven't seen the latest youtube stuff although I don't think youtube really doeas anybody justice looks or soundwise.

Give Orgasmaphobia a few listens, there are some little gems in there that will grow on you. If you find out anything about the new album please let me know.
