I don't get the "headbanger"

I don't like the headbanger either - it always reminds me of tossing the hammer! I think it looks particularly ugly when start off on the floor, get flung around a few times and then dumped on the ice again at the end. It's not so bad when the pros do it as they do start and finish standing up. It they insisted on doing it with Hayley, perhaps it would have been better to leave it until she might be able to start from standing up.

I don't like it. Its not very graceful to watch and it is incredibly dangerous. Hayley had a fall tonight simply because Daniel caught a sequin or something. If he did that in the headbanger she could end up with a broken neck or worst. When David Seaman attempted it he ended up injuring his professional partner. It just isn't worth it. Personally I preferred Daniella's routine tonight although to be fair Hayley was going great up until the fall.

It's utterly pointless.

I think Hayley is a good dancer and performer and she's as good as any of the other skaters but if you look carefully, still she does very little 'basic skating' and certainly less than others on her own. It's all the fluff around it that is impressing people imo.

I think Gary, Danny and Mikey all do much more skating on their own using mohawks, 3 turns etc than Hayley does (whether she can do it or not, I don't know, she doesn't get much chance to show it).

One thing bothering me - didn't Clare in series 2 go into the headbanger from standing?

I am sure it HAS been done before.

By far!

But I didn't like the headbanger. Can't believe she should be expected to do something Jayne has never done in 40 years of skating!

I thought Suzanne did it from standing too.

I hate the headbanger.

I really don't like the headbanger - and can't see the point of it. Okay - there is trust between the couples but quite honestly if someone' head got really injured which caused brain damage - how would Torville and Dean feel when they had pressurised an amateur skater into doing it. It has to be one of the most dangerous moves on the ice.

No Clare didnt, Suz is only girl to do it from standing, though she finished it lying down, only the pros so far finish it standing.

Then it was a huge compliment from Robin when he said that in a few weeks she'd be able to do it like the pros do - starting and finishing standing - as no celeb has ever done that.

This said, it is one trick I'd be happy if they dropped from the show. Too dangerous, too disruptive, too ugly and also gives the women an unfair advantage over the male celebs as it has a huge 'wow' factor and it's unlikely that any of the men will be able to incorporate it into their routines.

C&J never did it because its not ice dancing

I'll be impressed by the headbanger when Kieron manages to do it with Brianne...

Also, I slightly agree with the poster above who pointed out that Hayley really doesn't often do much actually skating. The headbanger is just another example of stuff that requires her to do not a lot. Most of what she is doing is difficult for her pro, but relatively easy for her. But then maybe I'm biased because I do find her incredibly saccharine most of the time anyway, unfortunately.

Clare does what she does from standing.

Bonnie did it from standing too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi3VS...eature=related

The problem is what is a headbanger. I think Clare's was called one in the TV show commentary and Bonnie's was called a bounce spin which wiki thinks is a headbanger. Thats caused confusion. They may be something else depending on where the boundaries are. What Suzanne did in show 9 is called a float spin

Suzanne's first headbanger looks like this and starts where Hayley's did
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xCQ7...eature=related

And the tour version started from standing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-Fum...eature=related.

The full one with twists is in the Final's version of Music.

Many males have to do basic skating around the ring a lot - often pointlessly with no story or anything else going on - because they can't do anything else in terms of tricks and most can't act or dance well enough to do more. They don't have multiple lifts beause they can't do multiple lifts. You saw that tonight with people complaining of dull routines and Mikey having problems with dance steps. The result is that the better girls end up with routines overloaded from either side with what the boys can't do - the difficult lifts and the smaller dance steps plus the story acting on top. The better girls end up dancing nearer their partners even when they are not touching them, often because their ability to dance better allows them to be given choregraphy that makes them dance as a pair. As most boys can't dance much let alone do it on skates, they tend to often move between two extremes - acting as a prop for their female celeb to move around or being kept out of the way so the female can do something eyecatching safely away from them. As you say , it would be interesting to see what one of the top girls could do with a top male routine minus lifts - Sharon could probably lift better than most too.

I don't think they would be allowed to do it if it was too dangerous. The male pros know what they are doing and basic trigonometry and the laws of motion help. The taller girls who might be at more risk are either just ruled out or are kept well away from it. Being held upside down by Kieron might be as if not more dangerous. If you ruled out the risk of someone dropping someone or cutting someone or someone breaking something you wouldn't have a show or sport at all.

Clare's one there is a float spin.

Just to add that I HATE the headbanger, can't stand it. If I never saw it again I'd be happy

I know Matthew does it so I wouldn't be surprised if Danniella doesn't do it before the end of the series either.

I channel surfed in and out of DOI last night and every time I flicked it on the headbanger was mentioned.

I know it's a dangerous move but the hype over it is just silly.

I don't get it either. It's hardly elegant.
Hayley was very brave though, I admire her for agreeing to do it.

That's because if anything its a Pairs skating move - lifts in Ice Dancing are much more restictive which is why she had never done it.... I'm pretty sure that it is banned in ALL major competitions because of the danger to the female skater....

Personally I hate seeing it done on this sort of show - its an incredibly advanced move, not attractive to watch, obviously scares the bejasus out of the celeb victim and as has been said - including it interrupts the flow of the routine as few if any of the celebs can do it while skating - they have to stop completely.... I for one would be quite happy never to see it again.

Ban it completely please

It's a novelty that has lost its novelty and therefore its shock value, so there's no point to it any more.

See, I always thought it looked cool in that film The Cutting Edge, but then they finish it with a bit more panache

I could definitely do without it on DOI though - it becomes all about the trick and not at all about the skating, which was, the judges decided, why Hayley made such a mess of the middle of her routine. Plus, as everyone else has said, it's an ugly and ungainly move that is no fun to watch.

I don't like it either it looks ungainly and is just a stunt. I don't think Haley is way ahead in any way, she can 'perform' bit I find her constant grinning off putting and her delivery is imo quite jerky. Would like her to do something more graceful so that she can show more of a range.

I hate it, too. I just wonder how long it will be before we end up watching some poor female getting brained live on TV straight after dinner on a Sunday evening. Would they consider performing such a move in a dance show? But add in a slippery surface and razor-sharp blades and suddenly it's great for family entertainment!
I'd rather the show focused more on better synchronicity and musicality - more dancing with fewer stunts.
