Is breeding harmful?

I have been asked a buddy of mine if he could use my dog as a stud. But them I was told that it will cause harm to your dog if you don't continue to use him for that. They said it causes some kind of anal problems. Does anybody know if this is true? I was cosidering getting him fixed but if he could breed and not be harmed by it, then I would maybe re-consider.

It won't harm him physically (other than the potential risks from two people trying a mating between a maiden dog and bitch - of which there are many).

It could well make him a right Pain in the Backside and a wanderer however when he becomes aware of a bitch in season.

WHY does he want to use your dog at stud?

Are there no breeders with suitable stud dogs?

Have both dogs had the recommended health tests for the breed? (I am assuming they are both the same breed).

Bitch owners have the pick of stud dogs, even pet owners use champions - so what has your dog got that makes him head and shoulders above the rest?

What advice could you give what I am assuming is a novice breeder on whelping and raising a litter?

What do you know about pre-mate and other forms of ovulation testing?

How would you know when the bitch is ready? how would you know when a problem arises?

It really isn't as easy as putting two dogs together and they will mate - some bitches, particularly maidens can be very aggressive - how would you deal with this?

I've raised three litters (so attended 6 matings) with my own dogs, plus the matings I used to assist with when I worked at kennels.

I've got a beautiful boy here sired by a SH CH and shown regularly - but I've yet to even get my head around allowing him to be used at stud.

I would agree with Sue51's post and just add it is often a bad idea to use a pet dog at stud as it can raise their status giving rise to urine marking in the house, increased competitiveness with other males, increased interest in bitches and decreased interest in listening to you, as well as the wandering/roaming Sue mentioned.

Although some males might be fine with stud duties, in other cases it is letting the genie out of the bottle and you cannot always turn the clock back afterwards.

Even castrating them afterwards doesn't remove the experience
