I have been with all the networks EXCEPT virgin. And my experience:

Orange
Three
t-mobile
O2
Vodaphone

That was in my order of rating. I am on three now, and the network is fantastic, though the customer services leaves quite a bit to be desired, I like different things about all the networks (except voda, who I hate).
Orange have fantastic customer services, and they are a well run operation, you can't fault their network coverage. (oh and best voicemail)
Three are just SO cheap you can't complain! Great phones and great tariffs. The 3G content is also quite cool.
T-Mobile, well their voicemail is next best to Orange + it is free to check. Their price-plans are the most reasonable of any 2G provider. But their coverage isn't that great/
O2, I hated their voicemail service, and their priceplans were a rip off, but they had good customer support. Their website is very tacky thou.
Vodaphone, I hate vodaphone voicemail, their prices are extortionate, their customer services were very rude when I called them, and the people in the vodaphone stores were next to useless.

I have been with Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile. Overall I think,

1) Orange
2) T-Mobile
3) Vodafone

[1] Orange
[2] Vodafone
[3] o2

I'm not gonna comment on T-Mobile & Virgin as I can't receive these where I live.

Wasn't impressed with O2 at all. Was with them for about 7 years (as BT Cellnet etc..), had a good customer loyalty discount or so they reckoned, which last year they decided to remove and sent my costs back up again.
I'd have to disagree with your comment about their customer services department. I tried to contact the call centre for the first time and they asked me for my password. Told them it was the first time i'd called them and so i hadn't set one up. They told me i had, which wasn't going to get me very far. They thought it was quite funny that i didn't know my password.
CS agent asked me for my name again and told me that was the password. Nice one i thought you've just broken the data protection act and WHO in their right mind uses their name as their password.
Now back with Orange (Pay as you Go), its okay but i am considering making the plunge onto the 3 network as the call costs seem quite good.

I hate the fact that you have to pay for voicemail. You dont have to pay to view text messages, but you have to pay to listen to voice messages. Makes no sense

Don't forget Virgin isn't a network. It is a virtual network that is actually run over T-Mobile.

Similarly, in large parts of the country 3 is actually 02.

If anyone tries telling you that there are more than 4 GSM and 1 (fully launched) 3G network then they are wrong.

Simon.

I've been with O2, Virgin and Orange in that order and personally think that Orange is the best out of the three.

O2 - Okay for cheap texts/WAP over GPRS with the online service. No real faults, coverage was okay where I lived.

Virgin - The lack of GPRS and Photo Messaging was the big turn-off for me. Plus they only had the one rather inflexible tariff, I don't really like those tariffs where you pay a high rate for a few minutes and then a low rate for the remainder of the day.

Orange - My favourite network. I love the cheap MMS'ing because I send loads of MMS's, I use them as a substitute for text messages when I'll be sending like 5 text's worth of information, 30p MMS's work out cheaper than 60p for a concatenated text of 800 characters. The only fault is coverage is a bit dicey where I live. I get no or very poor signal on the ground floor of my house, but it's okay on the first floor.

Orange in the best I have been on. Customer service is very good and you can actually speak to a human in their call centres in less than 5 mins.
