We have a dog who is pregnant and the male dog who got her pregnant is also our dog. Now I was just wondering when the female dog is having her puppies do we need to keep the male dog in a seperate room ?

crazy, people breeding their pets, and not even knowing what they need to do when the time comes. surely you have researched this thoroughly before allowing her to get pregnant

This is going to sound harsh, is it too late to have the pregnancy terminated? Your vet should be able to tell you. Your bitch could die during whelping, especially if you don't know what warning signs to look out for. If mum needs an emergency C-Section it could cost over a grand and won't be covered by insurance. Rehoming pups isn't easy at the moment - plenty of full litters are ending up in rescue, pure bred and mongrels alike.

I've heard that 'The Book of the Bitch' is a good book for owners intending to breed if you are determined to go ahead with this litter.

In answer to your specific question, yes you need to keep the male dog away. It is likely that you'll need to keep him away from the pups for the first 4 weeks.

Please get her spayed and the dog castrated to avoid a repeat.

How was the pregnancy confirmed?? If by a vet then maybe you should have asked them these kinds of questions?

Def do some research, ask the professionals and read up on the subject to keep both Mum and pups safe!

- didn't you think to keep them seperate when the bitch was in season?

I have to agree with the others that the best route would be to get a termination if it is still possible.

Assuming it is not, then get yourself "The Book of the Bitch" by J M Evans and Kay White and READ it.

Are the dogs the same breed? (please tell me they are not related)

What breed are they?

Are they KC registered? If yes, have their pedigrees got breeding endorsements on them?

Has either prospective parent had any health tests relevant to the breed? if not, it is feasible to get them done before the puppies arrive?

Please do seriously consider getting this pregnancy terminated if it was an unplanned mating.

If that is not an option, if you can answer the questions above (and many more I am sure) - then hopefully someone should be able to help you.

In answer to your question about keeping the male dog away from here - then yes, ALL dogs should be kept away from her and the babies until SHE decides otherwise, this could be a week, it could be a month, every bitch is different, but to be honest, you sound like you have no knowledge of what is ahead of you, the male dog really is the least of your worries.

Unfortunately, you are going to come in for criticism for a post like this, but in the same breath, what's done is done, and I would hate the puppies to suffer as a result of someone not coming back because of it.

Oh my god... I would've gotten my bitch spayed if I was to get a male dog and didn't want puppies... We're researching into breeding at the moment, although we do have 2 years to go until we are thinking of mating her...

I'd go to your vets, and if there is no way to terminate the pregnancy, to search for lovely homes asap, as you only have about 8 weeks until the delivery and then 8 weeks after...

Or you keep them apart during season time - I've got 5 entire bitches and one entire male - as have many other breeders - sometimes accidents do happen and you have to deal with it.

But even as a breeder with health tested bitches - if I felt it wasn't in the best interests to proceed, I would use the jab which would stop a pregnancy.
