So what happens when you try to play them? Does it look like it is playing them but you can't hear them (do you get the time bar with the slider moving along it)? I assume the volume in iTunes isn't muted

Is it possible itunes can't find the songs? It tends to have that problem with me (songs get marked by an exclamation mark and you have to relocate them for it).

Try using Media Monkey or Jriver Jukebox 12, see if the songs play through those programs...

If other sounds from the computer are playing (such as the startup and shutdown jingle), then it is most likely iTunes has some problem with the audio codecs, as hearing other sounds implies it isn't a problem with Windows own volume control settings (I'm assuming you're using Windows, Macs may be different). As such, reinstalling iTunes might fix the problem as it will probably reinstall any codecs which may be malfunctioning. It should certainly ensure any AAC encoded tracks play at any rate.

Do these music tracks play okay in other software such as Windows Media Player?

What operating system are you using?

If I remember correctly, from Vista onwards can't you set the volume level for individual applications separately. It maybe that at some point iTunes was muted or the volume reduced within the sound control panel.

Windows remembers the volume setting when you close an application and a program may therefore re-open with it's volume muted.

You had iTunes running when you opened the volume mixer?

The slider for iTunes was at the top?

First of all make sure you have iTunes open.

Go to the bottom right hand corner of your screen (where the clock is) there should be a speaker symbol. Click on it and that should bring up a volume slider, under which it says "mixer", click there. That should bring up the various different volume sliders for all the programs/devices you have open. Check the volume slider for iTunes is not muted.
