Steady night for BBC1 between 7-9pm as usual. In fact, I'm sure that's one of Antiques Roadshow's highest ratings in months. Seven Ages of Britain went out on a low, but I think the BSI made a mistake airing The Wonders of the Solar System at the same time as it's split the audience. Excellent for BBC2 though.

The Boyzone rating is the surprise from yesterday for me, as I didn't think it would get more than what Wild at Heart usually gets. One of Dancing on Ice's better weeks this series ratings-wise, as you'd expect for a semi final. Still nearly a million down from last year, of course.

Also looks like IPL on ITV4 is still going strong. According to digital-i, ITV4 had a 1.4% all day share on Friday. That's double what they'd usually get. It was the third most watched digital channel that day (behind ITV2 and ITV3).

Looks like ITV has secured England v USA and England v Algeria (World Cup). The two matches are in peak time.

BBC will show England v Slovenia and potential England last-16 and Quarter Final matches. If England reach the semis, both BBC1 and ITV1 will air the match. The BBC is also showing the most attractive group match not involving Fabio Capello's side - Brazil v Portugal, though that's not in peak time.

Full list of matches is expected to be released later today.

Regarding last night, good for Boyzone, and the Solar System documentary.

About the upcoming Britain's Got Talent, I think it'd benefit from a weekend split (maybe next year if this year is too soon) complimented with a return for the soaps.

- The 7pm chatshow slot on Tuesday nights might take viewers away from BBC One, especially if a popular light entertainment host is secured. Paul O'Grady is purely speculative - he probably wouldn't do it.
- Emmerdale's presence at 8pm will knock Holby to second place as long as the chat show lead-in suffices. Billing Tuesday's edition as "must-see" would also help ITV - but figures would not be great from the start.
- A new sitcom slot for ITV, much-needed in my opinion. The Emmerdale lead-in should give it the best possible opportunity, as long as it's good.
- Hell's Kitchen to return.

- The 9pm slot on Sunday's is the perfect opportunity to grab the younger audience - with BBC One delibarately skewing older. Afterlife is purely a hypothetical example though. A £1m-an-hour invested drama might work well.

Obviously ITV will benefit from the peak time for revenues etc, but just as long as England progress its also a fantastic deal for the BBC, who will carry all the interest if the final game matters and in the initial knockout stages. I would say the beeb will hold all the sway from Slovenia onwards.

What is the speculation about why the BBC have decided to have Ashes to Ashes on a Friday night? It's a high profile popular drama that would do better, surely, ratings wise on another night. Is it because it's the last series and they're not so bothered about ratings or getting in new viewers?

After watching the Stephen Gately tribute, I had a feeling it would do well. Very well produced and these kind of music shows are what ITV tend to well and they all look better than most of BBC1's entertainment offerings.

Though I do think DOI needs a big revamp next year. I would say have a Sat/Sun split but Saturdays will probably be full with Primeval/TV Burp and another entertainment show like Take Me Out.

Also worth noting that the 6.1m for TV Burp on Saturday is more impressive considering the show was repeated in almost the exact same slot, in the latest its ever been this series on Sunday.

Good for FIVE's films last night, especially the 10pm one. The 10pm films have been doing well in recent weeks, capitalising on weak competition from other terrestrials.

I think BBC1 suffered, as others said, from BBC2 at 9pm, but also The Restoration Man on CH4 which performed solidly.

Awful daytime performance for both ITV1 and BBC1-particuarly shocked at the This Morning rating despite weak competition on BBC1, but multichannels tend to take centrestage on Sundays.

Run ITV1's 16-34 friendly shows against the BBCs biggest 16-34 draw. Mad!!

A few bits from the latest official ratings:

- Let's Dance for Sport Relief averaged 6.93m for the whole series. Although still excellent, it was down 0.74m (-10%) from last year's series average.
- The National Lottery: Who Dares Wins got 6.27m for that week's episode, the show's best ever rating.

- Wild at Heart averaged 7.71m for the whole series. This was its least popular series yet, though the decline was actually quite small. Series averages in last 3 years: 2007- 7.94m, 2008- 8.17m, 2009- 8.03m. So a drop of 0.32m (-4%) in a year.
- Dancing on Ice's decline has been steeper: with 2 weeks of officials still to go, this series is currently averaging 8.22m. That's down 0.52m (-6%) from the first 10 weeks last year. It's not the least popular series though - that goes to the 2007 series which averaged 8.00m.

It's not about movies and imports at all for me really - it's about original British series, and they're just not there in the numbers they once were any more. We've gone from 4-5 9pm dramas a week on both BBC1 and ITV1 to just one or two.


The Sunday audience has grown - doubled in fact - since the early weeks, but the strategy is absolutely the right on for Glee. It is essentially an E4 show, and it's target audience will find it on E4.

If it were on C4 it would look out of place most nights in an 8pm or 9pm slot, and it is totally unsuitable for a 10pm slot. It could air earlier at the weekend, but then the E4 screening would look out of place on Sat or Sun at 7pm/8pm - and I doubt between them the C4 + E4 premiere figure would be any higher than it is now.

C4 Sales seems to be on strike again with their overnights, but be interesting to see the combined figure for Glee across it's showings (Mon 9pm E4, Thu 11pm E4, Sun 5.30pm C4, Sat around 10am). Got to be over 4m surely.


Any news on how the repeat run at 4pm is doing for E4 - it even ousts Friends out of the 5pm slot next Monday as they're airing a double bill on Monday (last week and tonight's episode), with a repeat of next weeks mid-season finale on the Tuesday then back to Veronica Mars from Wed.

Reasonable ratings for all last night, the Boyzone tribute did well fitting well into the DOI sandwich.

There's only data for Tuesday and Wednesday, so as interesting as it is to see some shows with only 9,000 viewers - I think the proper data needs to get put up somewhere.


Not surprising. I'm not surprised they've got the Saturday game, as BBC already have scheduling commitments (F1, Doctor Who) but for the Friday game, 2x Coronation Street and 1x Emmerdale will need to move.

Soccer Aid's kick off time on the tickets is 7:15pm. Which seems slightly bizarre - I thought ITV would have wanted kick off at 7:45pm or 8:00pm so it fills out the majority of primetime? Having it kick off at 7:15pm means it'd be over by 9:00pm?!

Oh, him. Well he was on Alan Carr last week, which trended on Twitter, but the show got its lowest rating of the series! So I wouldn't be surprised if Live From Studio Five didn't get a series high (maybe it got a series low) !

Overrun from the NCAA Basketball messed up the CBS schedule a bit last night, so it's hard to tell the exact numbers but The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss seem to have done well.

Desperate Housewives hit another all time series low with adults 18-49 down to a 3.5 (with 10.75m viewers). Jamie Oliver's new show followed it at 10pm but struggled with just 6.20m and a 2.2 rating in the demo, a distant third behind Celebrity Apprentice and Undercover Boss.

I think it might be right to announce that the seventh season will be the last for Desperate Housewives. Since Christmas it has really taken a dive (not helped by ABC scheduling) and its probably best to end on its own terms.
