E4 had a £60m budget in 2009 (possibly cut a bit this year) and all the ITV digital channels combined budgets aren't close to BBC3 either.

ITV Ad Revenue (2008):
ITV1 - £1127m
ITV Digital - £242m

ITV Budgets (for 2011):
ITV1 - £750m
ITV Digital - £95m
Regional - £71m
GMTV - £34m

So next year ITV1 will be operating on little over half of what BBC1 has?”

As others have said - the BBC hasn't killed ITV1; the increase in commercial competition has. Instead of (in some other fields) where increased competition improves standards, in this one it's hit standards instead as the advertising pie is cut into more and more chunks. ITV are now relying on event TV plus the soaps to keep afloat, which is a different approach to just a decade ago.

Indeed, but it's going to be increasingly hard for them to compete for viewers with the BBC.

There's no performance aspect, they're just 5 people moving to Hollywood seeking fame (models, acting, designers, musicians). The Real World is probably a better comparison in some ways. The new aspect is the whole internet thing but as I say, I'm not really feeling it. Unless they become famous (and I believe that is the plan and nobody is more likely to manage that than Fuller) then it's not got anything to set it apart from TV shows of the same kind.

That's true. The BBC is in a difficult position now. If it's seen as over competitive it'll get slaughtered but considering the budget differences, how it's going to come across as anything but?

Be interesting to see the officials. After the Opening Ceremony it's no surprise people didn't stay up - but the Closing Ceremony was 1000 times better and deserved more than a daytime repeat on BBC2 - if they'd repeated it in full from 6-9pm it probably would have got 3m or so viewers.

The Tonight Show ratings are only a tad higher from what Jay used to get and Letterman actually didn't too badly, I'm guessing Nightline is a news programme since Jimmy Kimmel is on straight after and I guess the audience jumps to either Letterman or Leno.

I wonder how long Leno will stay on the Tonight Show, I reckon two to three years, 2012 would be ideal as he would have done The Tonight Show and latenight for 20 years, Letterman is likely to retire when his contract expires in two years and he would have done latenight for 30 years with 11 years on Late Night and 19 years on The Late Show matching Johnny Carson. I have heard that CBS were interested in Jon Stewart to take over Letterman but whether he would leave The Daily Show is another thing,

I reckon he'll hang on for longer than that. I don't think NBC will be expecting anything less than another 5 years from him. Otherwise, there was no point bringing him back only to find themselves in an even worse position two/three years down the line. Who on earth could they replace him with? Jimmy Fallon?!

Conan has proved that these Late Night gigs aint easy and the audience will desert if they don't get a very particular type of host. Finding Letterman and Leno replacements is going to be massively difficult and risky - not something the networks will want to do until absolutely necessary.

Nightline is like Newsnight, but more mainstream.

I honestly think Leno and Letterman will still be there in 10 years from now. I'd say Kimmel was the only one who could be considered to replace either now, but I think that is a long way off.

CBS will likely look for Letterman's within the next year when they know for sure that Letterman isn't going to extend again and not face what NBC had with Conan and Leno, aside from Jon Stewart, the only other host who could takeover from Letterman would be Craig Ferguson but his humour may not appeal to the Letterman audience plus he might not even want the gig.

ITV, after asset revaluation, as a similar budget to the BBC.

Craig Feruson said he wouldn't want to replace Letterman and thinks Stewart should get the job, who has been rumoured to be Dave's successor-in waiting for years. Stewart has said it's something he'd think about but expressed his concerns about the severe lack of creative freedom you get on network tv compared to cable.
After the Conan/Leno mess I expect he'll stick with The Daily Show''.

Bit quiet in here. Then again, there seems to be a delay with the overnights. I can't find anything via the usual sources just yet.

Tonight could be a bit of a struggle, against the England match. Perhaps the judgements on whether it's a success or not may have to wait until the official numbers are posted...

Five Days still rating excellently- not much of a drop off from Monday. The football on ITV1 rated better than recent weeks in that slot but it's not brilliant. Looks like CSI was hit hard, as I haven't seen it that low for a long time.

DS is reporting slightly different numbers:

EastEnders: 9.71m (42.1%)
Emmerdale: 7.32m (33.8%)

Where on Itunes did they report the figures by the way?

I thought the closing ceremony was quite dreadful compared to the opening. Very tacky at parts while the opening ceremony was just superb, though I did like the humour of the closing ceremony.

It's only a friendly kickabout Kenny, albeit close to a worldwide tournament of some significance. If Gerrard's lot can stick it in the net once or twice before half time, it shouldn't be much of an issue if Five Days is truly compulsive viewing. Plus there are highlights at 2245.

Everyone in the ratings thread has predicted viewing figures of around 7m so it must be expected to preform REALLY well, that would certainly have a big impact on Five Days, no?
