You do know that Sade have been around for over 25 years? They aren't some new band that's just come along. Soldier Of Love is their first studio album in 10 years, it's nice to see it doing so well around the world I don't think it will top the uk charts today though.

Incorrect actually

Sade is a band of which Sade Adu is the lead singer.

What Hayden said.

The band is named after Sade herself, which can be misleading.
living proof

Actually Helen Adu is the name of the singer, the band name is taken from her middle name Folasade, and the band without the lead singer is called Sweetback, and they have back the likes of Maxwell. sweetback too the name from the melvin & mario van peebles movie sweet sweetbacks badass song which had the soundtrack by earth wind and fire

and whilst she was born in nigeria, she moved to london when she was 4 years old

Would that be the same Sade I saw 25 years ago in a small slightly dingy club in Birmingham around the time they released their debut album Diamond Life ?

No .... never heard of them

So Sade are number 1 around the world on itunes, let's see what the eventual outcome on the actual chart is then.

In the midweeks the album was number 1. Massive Attacks was at the start of the week, but Sade took over.

Got the album and find it totally addictive but it's not all as hard hitting as the title track (which is amazing btw). There are a lot of quieter songs. I remember Diamond Life with fondness and then sort of drifted away. So glad she/they are back; we needed Sade so much at the moment.

Did Sade make that horrid Christmas song?

I'm old so remember when the first album Diamond Life came out. That's still the best Sade album imo.

That sounds similar to me. Unless I'm mistaken in my assumption that the glam rock band's name is pronounced "Sla-Day"

In all seriousness though, I never realised that there was even a band "Sade" distinct from the singer "Sade" (who I always assumed was a solo artist).

It's a pretty understandable mistake though; I never understood why a band that wanted an identity in its own right would choose the same name as one of their members. It's different with (e.g.) Alice Cooper, which was the name of the band before the lead singer went solo, or Blondie, which was never the name of the lead singer even if the mistake was understandable.

But to intentionally confuse things like that is IMHO just silly.

Then again, there are "bands" like Jamiroquai that may as well be solo artists. Has anyone *ever* knowingly seen any of the other "members"? (Looking it up on Wikipedia, it appears that the other three original members have all now left).

BTW, if Sade got a big tent, would it be the Marquee de Sade?

OP Sade been out years their first album was out in 1984 which is the best of them all imo. What with good songs like Your love is king and smooth operator.

I'm not sure the name was something they actually got to choose; it seems they were all part of the band Pride and then started to attract much attention as a smaller splinter group fronted by Sade (who was backing singer in Pride). Sade was then signed in her own right and the others were later made official members of the new act. It's not totally clear from what I've read but Sade (the singer) seems immensely loyal to the others and watching the behind the scenes video on the site reveals maybe for the first time how the 4 members rely on each other to make the music and how well they work together.

http://www.sade.com/

It's a very well put together video and seems to lay it all bare. It's quite touching especially where Sade says she never wanted to be a singer but became a singer! How you just become a singer (worth a reported £40M) is a mystery to me but it is probably quite possible!
