Boring performance but very smooth skating.

Thought he was a lot better than last time

He's always smooth. He's a likeable guy, he just needs to bring some of his cheekiness to his performances imo.

Jason saying 'No one else would have him' to Holly was taking it way too far, though.

I thought he was pretty good although it's very rarely him that I'm looking at.

Gary is a nice guy but all his dances seem to be skated at the same tempo and with the same expression on his face.

How he notched up such high marks tonight is beyond me.

I like Gary. I don't see jason's problem with him at all. I think Gary skates very well.

Jason doesn't like Gary, Danny and Sharron and makes it very obvious he doesnt like them.

No one can say the skating is bad as it isn't, it;s really good and solid.

It just the same fixed expressionless face he has pulled from week one that is the problem.

He is meant to be an actor and yet doesn't act or react to anything that is happening on the ice.

It's like a robot: Technically correct, but devoid of all life.

He is so boring I nearly switched off when they said he was up next as the last 1

He's gorgeous

I like Gary, too, and think he skates well. Robin was right in what he said the other week, though, he is in danger of just being 'nice' - nice looking, nice personality, putting in nice performances. We all know that people go for the big 'journey' stories in these kind of shows and Gary hasn't really got that going for him.

He needs a really good upbeat routine that makes him work harder to get his personality across, the routines he is given don't challenge and bring out the best in him!

Dead behind the eyes and a terrible ability to convey emotion through his physicality espescially considering his craft is one that requires such skills.

I thought he made a mistake in answering back Jason, because Jason wasn't talking about Maria out-skating him, he was talking about her ability to communicate emotion in her expressions. Gary has been working as an actor for quite some time now, so he has no excuse.

He doesn't seem very competitive at all and every week he is just going through the motions!

Nice enough chap, but he is incredibly dull. His skating sends me to sleep.

I think that Gary is one of the best male ice dancers in the competition. He could be a dark horse.

I agree he's one of the best skaters but he has absolutely no performance skills, he seems to be a nice guy but he's no entertainer - shame really, he has the ability to go all the way

IMO, Gary skates absolutely beautifully, technically he is up there with Hayley or maybe even better.

If only he were more like the other boys, all of whom seem completely unaffected by self-consciousness, he'd be the consummate competitor.

I know a lot of emphasis is being put on his upbeat cheeky persona but perhaps he needs a routine which is darker in character, I would have thought he could dig into his character in the Bill for a bit of edge and tension, that might just do the trick in terms of a complete performance.

I agree totally with this. I think he is quite self conscious. Maybe for each performance Maria could get him to pretend he is playing a character and that would help wth his performance. i think he is getting a bit more confident each week.

I have to say, I find Gary really painful to watch each week. He just looks so awkward and uncomfortable all the time.

He's a good enough skater, but there's zero passion or enjoyment in his routines, and that make him not very enjoyable to watch. He just looks like he's doing the show because he feels he has to. I think in terms of doing well, there are much more deserving skaters in the competition, to be honest. Even Danny seems to put far more energy and belief into what he's doing.

I agree completely!

It does seem that his nerves and anxiety are holding him back - he is very self-conscious. This is, though, not that unusual in actors - actors can often be very shy people, who are very uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations - acting becomes a cathartic experience for them.

But because this skating is more about him, and judging him personally, he can't put on a front (or mask) as he would when acting.

Yes actors can often be shy in real life, but this isn't real life and he isn't being judged personally, he is being judged on skating ability which he has to some extent, but also to a large extent on performance, which he should be able, as an actor, to produce! He has a big audience, spotlights, costumes etc. and tbh I don't think he comes across as shy on the videos either. He simply cannot perform, which is crucial!

Yes, that's exactly what it is. He is a talented actor - at least he was outstandingly good in the whole Hollyoaks male-rape storyline when he was very young - so somebody somewhere needs to tap into that ability and use it to good effect. As another FM suggested, maybe he needs to be given a somewhat more serious 'role' to play next time. He might feel more comfortable with that, and that might in turn bolster his confidence and let him see a way forward that suits him personally.
