Bluetooth Headphones

I'm looking for a pair of bluetooth headphones for use with my iPod Touch. I've done a bit of research and know there are various compatibility issues with some. For example on some the rewind/fast forward functions don't work. I wondered if any forum members had experience of these type of headphones and would give me their views.

What I'd like to know is:-

Headphone make and model

What control functions on the headphones do/don't work?

What the sound quality is like?

Is there a delay in the sound when watching videos?

How comfortable are they?

I don't think you'll find any bluetooth headphones that have the ability to do anything other than replay the music, unless bluetooth is built in to the iPOD and you are using the 'phones they specify.

Bluetooth headphones often come with their own little transmitter than plugs into the headphone socket, and thats it.

You synch the 'set to the transmitter and treat them as if they were simple wired headphones without any remote controls.

I use a sweex bluetooth headset which came with said transmitter into either of my mp3 players, but all it can do is replay tracks.

As far as I understand it the Bluetooth protocol for play, pause, skip etc is not enabled in iPod Touchs or iPhones so which ever haedphones you get won't matter in that respect. Why Apple have not enabled that part of the protocol I don't know!

Apple just haven't implemented A2DP. No next/prev track options.

OP - how are you intending to use the headphones - down the gym, just sat at the desk, on the train, at home, etc?

If you're intending to use them down the gym whilst running/cycling, forget it. Just go and get a decent pair of wired phones.

Reason being is that there are no A2DP phones out there that can handle a mild amount of sweat ingress, at least without making you look like Princess Leia or a cyberman. I've had 3 pairs of Motorola S9s and some Jabra BT2020s. Both were fantastic on sound quality (especially the Motos). All 3 pairs of Motos almost totally stopped working. Volume, play/pause/fwd/rwd all stopped working. The Jabras died in exactly the same way.

The Jabra BT620s kept working regardless of the circumstances, but they were over the ear devices with a foam covering that just kept your ears wet with sweat .... a bit icky. Sound was good, battery life was good, but they just looked utterly horrible.

I have Nokia BH-503 for in the gym. Work great, who gives a toss about looks when I am the sweat monster
I have a set of BH-905 for listening to music at work and conference calls. Particularly useful as the 503's are drying out during the day

The A2DP is the stereo bluetooth profile and it can be used in conjunction with the AVRCP profile (Audio/ visual remote control). Apple only partially supports the AVCRP profile in their latest products. You cannot skip tracks but you can stop/ play/ pause. It is the skipping of tracks I find particularly useful in the gym!!

A couple of 5 second Goolge searches will get you these links:

Mmmm, thats interesting - Apple are claiming full AVRCP support, but I was under the impression from user experience that it wasn't fully implemented. The only thing that worked was play and pause. No prev/next track.

I think I could rival you as a sweat monster .... personal preference for down the gym is now a clippy style player (was a shuffle, that died, now a Sansa Clip) and a pair of reasonable phones.

If you look at the table that's linked above, there's an asterisk next to AVRCP, which specifies:

* iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch (2nd generation) support pause, play, and stop for AVRCP.

*facepalm*

So they don't support AVRCP, or at least only the most basic implementations. Can it really be so hard ..... ?
