Why is my cat fascinated by my toilet habits?

When I go to back one out, my cat, who is invariably curled up on the bed, will race across to the bathroom door and sit outside it, purring loudly.

The moment I open the bathroom door, having flushed the toilet, she saunters back into the bedroom, hops back onto the bed, and falls asleep again.

I wonder what her interest is

If I were her, I wouldn't go within 10' of the bathroom door, for fear of being asphyxiated.

When me and my housemates had a cat it spent most of the time sitting on a chair in the bathroom (i don't mean the actual toilet). When she wasn't in the bathroom she ran in when someone entered. She had a really interest in watching exactly what we were doing, like lifting herself onto the toilet seat when we were weeing and trying to look behind us when we were making number twos. Really bizarre. She like watching us in the shower as well.

Sorry...have offered now answers but have shared the experience..

When I had a cat I didn't like it watching me shit. It just feels odd having someone staring at you even if it is just a cat

My cats the same. Everytime I go for a wee he walks in and jumps onto my lap. I think it's more to do with the fact that I've got up off the sofa and left the room. He wants to make sure I don't leave the house without feeding him first.
When I have a bath he puts his paws on the edge of the bath and stares at me.
He's a bit of a perv though.

It is a strange one. I have four cats and they all ignore me 99% of the time but if i'm in the bathroom they're all clamouring to get in.

Ours are the same. One of them likes to sit on the side of the bath if given the chance. He usually gets shoved out despite his protests. The risk of injury if he falls in is waaaaay too great.

But mine doesn't bat an eyelid when I go into the kitchen or the bedroom.

She only moves when I go into the bog.

Our Burmese house-cat when I lived at home with my parents used to scratch to come in and "observe" us. He also liked sitting on the seat and trying to get his paw in to the loo water. He fell in one day though and got very wet and never did it ever again.

In childhood the family had a black cat who actually peed in the loo, squatting over the edge of the seat, you'd hear the widdling noise but it would be always be a secretive wee and it would jump down if anyone approached. I crept up and spied through the crack in the open door, and later wrote about it in my school diary, the teacher made me read it out in class so everyone laughed and my mother was horrified to think all the neighbours imagined she kept a dirty house with a cat who used the toilet.

The cat I have now loves to watch me potting up plants in the greenhouse and then planting them out, I'm convinced he thinks I plant my turds in pots and grow things out of them which I later bury in the garden, like he does his. He's caused me to look at dahlia tubers in a whole new light. I have a spare laundry basket near the loo cistern which I keep the loo rolls in and he likes to sleep on top of it, and often won't budge when I'm on the throne, even when the loo is flushed near him. It took me a while to get over feeling self-conscious when everything I did was observed at such intimate range.

Max, the elder of my two silver tabbies is obsessed by the bathroom- he can stare at the shower drain for ages- sometimes it gurgles which intrigues him. He also likes to accompany me in the morning for my daily motions! was very unnerving at first as other cats hadn't but I quite like the comapny.

Also we have a big deep bath built in with a ledge all round big enough for candles, wine buckets, books etc. My Sunday treat of choice is a long hot bath with the Sunday supplements, the Archers omnibus and a bottle of dry white. Max always joins me, curled up on the ledge and often tries to groom my wet hair.

Must have been a Perv in his previous life!

I have taken to locking to door whenever I go to the loo now even if I am in the house on my own. The catch on the bathroom is weak and if I don't lock the door the little dears like to burst in and then stare at me until I finish. Rather disconcerting.

For cats toileting has a lot to do with territory and territory has a lot to do with status so urine and faeces and quantity, when produced and in what location they are produced is a big issue, as is whether thay are left exposed or covered over (flushed?) so it's all a big deal to a cat that is territory/status aware (some are much less so than others.)

On the same note. I had to visit the bathroom at 3am this morning. All three decided to follow me there, watch and then follow me back to bed. It was like some really weird take on the Pied Piper............

Nonsense. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.

If my cat had hands I'd expect a little clap afterwards as well

I've always wondered the same! Every time I go to the loo Alice comes with me, unless I've got friends over in which case she's fine.
If I'm having a shower and shut her out 90% of the time she'll be outside the door crying....which is a habit I'm trying (and failing) to break.

I never realised it was such common behaviour.

I thought my cat was a one-off.
