I always see chavs carrying round River Island plastic carrier bags. Why do they do it!?
Do they think they are 'posh' if they carry around a plastic bag just because it's got a popular name on it!? And for pity's sake, it's not even expensive shops, it's just highstreet ones such as New Look and River Island. Why would they save a plastic carrier bag to carry around with them? (I'm pretty sure they aren't trying to save the enviroment!)
It makes them look chavvy and pathetic..

I don't see it happening a lot but i also don't see the problem if it does happen.

if i'm carrying something like books which are too heavy/too big for my handbag, i use a carrier bag. I'm not trying to look cool, i'm saving myself a sore back or shoulders plus i'm keeping the books dry. Also, i am recycling so i am saving the environment.

If that makes me look "chavvy" "neddish" or "pathetic" then i'm sorry it upsets you but i really couldn't give a stuff.

Maybe they've just bought something?

Must admit I used to do that the first time I started shopping there.. The carrier bags are funky colours and are strong so they don't tear easily. I remember when it was 'cool' to carry a Jane Norman plastic bag round school too

In Scotland, or at least in Glasgow, we say "ned" rather than "chav"

Everyone I see with those bags have just come from there...mind they are strong bags. I used them to store a bunch of books (uni text books included) while decorating, picked it up with the books still in them and it never broke.

People bid for them on eBay cheaper than buying something to get the carrier I suppose.

I noticed a lot of people at college use 'designer' carrier bags to put their folders in. It looks a bit tacky to me, you can get strong shopper bags ideal for putting books and folders in very cheaply in most high street shops, though they don't necessarily have "look where I go shopping, aren't I cool?" plastered all over them...

The Jane Norman carrier bags were popular here too, I had one of their bags because I paid for an Oasis bag at their concessions til and they didn't have any other bags and my friend nicked it and used it as a school bag

Stupid question but how can a chav be made to look chavvvvvy by carring a carrier bag. Surely if you have already identified them as a chav, the carrier bag makes no difference. Also did you ever consider some of these chavs might be carrying things. I know i did when i was younger, if i was staying at a mates or taking my P.E. kit of school or taking books back to the library. Supermarket carrier bags dont have the same strenght for some reason?

Jane Norman bags were cool at school when I was there too, we all did it. I think it's partly because they're bigger than other carrier bags and don't tear as easily.

It was just a 'cooler' way of carrying stuff to school, everyone used to 'save' their 'cool' bags to use! Tesco/Sainsbury's/etc bags = not suitable for carrying PE kit etc in (and break really easily anyway!)... River Island/Jane Norman/cool shops were.

Wasn't just the chavs around here though, all the girls did it!

Oh yeah, you get Year 10s doing that, they think they look really posh with them, when actually they look like cheap chavs who value a free carrier bag...let's hope they read this forum
